Introduction

During a dinner at Le Sergent Recruteur in Paris in October 2025, I struck up a conversation about wine with an American couple seated at the table next to us. I quickly realized Lacey Lucia was with a Napa Valley winery I'd never heard of called The Vineyard House. Once I learned about their Oakville location and that Atelier Melka makes their wines, I was thrilled to discover this producer - what a delightful surprise!

Lacey graciously invited me for a complimentary tour and tasting on my next trip to Napa, and I took her up on that offer in January 2026. After getting a bit lost on my way to the tasting - accidentally driving around in Far Niente's vineyards since neither Google Maps nor Waze takes you directly to The Vineyard House - Jason greeted me at the estate and began what would become one of my most memorable Napa experiences, generously pouring seven wines including several library vintages.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2021 The Vineyard House Chardonnay 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

First visit to The Vineyard House in Oakville with Jason. The Vineyard House makes a Chardonnay as a tribute to founder Gil Nickel's original passion for white Burgundy after discovering wines from Montrachet during his first trip to France. Jason poured me a glass of this as we began the property tour. I was so engaged with the vineyard tour that I didn't write down any tasting notes, but I enjoyed this so much that I purchased some for my cellar.

  • 2011 The Vineyard House Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

First visit to The Vineyard House in Oakville with Jason. This vintage was produced by Bill Ballentine, who made The Vineyard House wines from the inaugural 2005 vintage through fermentation in 2018. Coravin pour with an hour of air. Herbaceous nose with noticeable Cabernet Franc in the blend - actually smells like 100% Cabernet Franc. Medium tannins that improved with the cheese from the charcuterie board.

  • 2012 The Vineyard House Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

First visit to The Vineyard House in Oakville with Jason. This was Bill Ballentine's seventh vintage as winemaker for The Vineyard House. Coravin pour with an hour of air. Plum on the nose with red fruit on the palate. Integrated tannins showing how well these wines age.

  • 2013 The Vineyard House Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

First visit to The Vineyard House in Oakville with Jason. Another vintage from Bill Ballentine's tenure as winemaker. The Vineyard House estate sits in Halter Valley, a small sub-appellation in western Oakville bounded by prestigious neighbors including Harlan Estate, BOND, Futo Estate, and Promontory - Jason even pointed out that some fruit going into Harlan comes from The Vineyard House's vineyards. Coravin pour with an hour of air. More structure than the first two vintages with beautiful layers of red and blue fruit. This was my favorite wine of the entire tasting, compelling enough that I purchased some for my cellar.

  • 2014 The Vineyard House Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

First visit to The Vineyard House in Oakville with Jason. Bill Ballentine's ninth vintage as winemaker. Coravin pour with an hour of air. Blue fruit on the nose without the Cabernet Franc herbaceousness found in earlier vintages. Darker fruit character with a silky texture.

  • 2021 The Vineyard House Cabernet Sauvignon Block 8 The Boss Vineyard H.W. Crabb's Hermosa Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

First visit to The Vineyard House in Oakville with Jason. Atelier Melka (Philippe Melka and director of winemaking Maayan Koschitzky) took over winemaking duties in 2018, making this their third vintage. "The Boss" is The Vineyard House's ultra-premium Cabernet from Block 8, the highest block on the estate. The property was originally built in 1853 by William Baldridge, a prominent Napa citizen who participated in the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt in Sonoma. Coravin pour with an hour of air. Super tannic with a fresh mint nose. The tannins worked beautifully with the cheese on the charcuterie board.

  • 2021 The Vineyard House Cabernet Franc Block 5 "Crabb's Black Burgundy" H.W. Crabb's Hermosa Vineyard Oakville 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

First visit to The Vineyard House in Oakville with Jason. Atelier Melka's third vintage producing wines for the estate. The estate encompasses 33 acres with 25 under vine, primarily growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Since I'd been enjoying the Cabernet Franc characteristics in the blends, Jason generously poured me a glass of their pure Cabernet Franc. Coravin pour without additional air. Better with the cheese from the charcuterie board.

Closing

My visit to The Vineyard House exceeded all expectations. Jason's hospitality was exceptional, from the vineyard tour pointing out neighbors like Harlan Estate to showing me Jeremy's impressive vintage car collection in the vineyard barn. The tasting, including some library wines spanning 2011 to 2021 beautifully demonstrated both Bill Ballentine's and Atelier Melka's winemaking styles, with the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon standing out as my clear favorite. I'll definitely return to check out their new winery cave once it's completed and the historic house restoration once it is finished.
