Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2003 Dom Pérignon Champagne

    France, Champagne

We had this 5 months ago and rated 96. But on the date it was a touch too reductive and less expressive than 5 months ago. We hope the rest of our bottles with be like the ones before.

  • 2003 Château Gruaud Larose 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

The wine has a nose of 2003, with a rich and a soft burned fruit feel.
But the palate is solid and drinks very well and does not suffer the ripeness and hear of the vintage. The nose does though . Good wine and drinks very well now and with decent life ahead. Not the most elegant. 91

  • 2003 Château Léoville Barton 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

A good 13 years since we had this last ( Papies 93) and on the day was a bright and expressive, beautiful nose. The nose was probably the best of our line up. The wine doesn’t follow well on the palate, could use some depth and the low acidity here robs it of the structure. But it is also a beautiful wine, devout of any other wrongs of 2003 and just drinks so well now. Probably at peak . 93

  • 2003 Château Montrose 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

9 whole years since we had this last ( Papies 94) and the wine continues the fine path, as if not affected of phased by the workings of 2003 this is a magnificent wine and testament to the greta and pure wine making at this great estate. We are very happy we have another r4 bottles of this to enjoy over the next couple of decades. 94 for now and with capacity.

  • 2003 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

The wine is paying now the price of a heavy use of oak in its youth. Similar to the 2004 we had some years ago ( Papies 91) this has a residue of a coffee/mocha feel of rich oak. Past that the wine has a the austerity of pauillac and the elegance of the great wine it is. Softer, rounder wine, elegant but just with that dollop of not needed oak that just puts the wine of kilter to being great. 92

  • 2003 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

The nose is sensational and just sings of great fruit and spice and juicy fruit.
And here lies the issue with this wine, the first glass if impressive, expressive and so welcoming, but along the way it becomes heavy and loses its charm on that account . Almost overtries and the 2003 rich and ripe feel is very evident. Very solid 92-93 still but could be a bit too much.

  • 2003 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Bright and full of energy, almost young albeit he age and is full of charm. So well made, soft botrytis feel, mineral and with proper acidity. Soft rich feel but the acidity keeps it in check and has that full on petrolly feel of Riesling along with a light feel of caramel/toffee. This will live for ever we feel. Very solid. 93
