  • 2024 A Tribute to Grace Wine Company Grenache Santa Barbara County 89 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

The nose is fresh and lifted with pretty tones of clove spices, strawberry cream, raspberries, sour red cherries, savory spices, fresh herbs, and rose petals. There is excellent balance and a lovely, lightness of being that is fun to smell. The Medium/full bodied feel is playful and fresh, but lacking slightly on the mid-palate with crisp, medium+ acidity that is lip smacking and silky, medium tannins. This is pretty and refined with excellent freshness to the fruit and showing off the elegant side of Grenache.

The nose is the epitome of refinement with a bit of nuance and poise to the tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, dark red berries, licorice, savory spices, herbs, baking spices, rose petals, violets, a touch of bitter chocolate, and wild flowers. There is excellent depth and style here as the tones just meld together. The Medium/full bodied feel is deft and balanced with tart, medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins that retain some youth. So…..I’m sure these will age longer. But man, this is pretty sexy right now!

There is a more searching quality to the tones as they show off a darker hue with dark red cherries, baking spices, vanilla extract, licorice, sour raspberries, crushed rocks, crushed berries, violets, clove spices, and some fresh herbs that all meld well together. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and poised, but with some noticeable youth. The Medium+ acidity is refreshing and vibrant while the medium+ tannins also show off some youth. This feels like it is still a couple of years away from really opening up. That said, what’s there is excellent and I’m really enjoying how this shows a different side to her style compared to the SBH wines.

  • 2020 A Tribute to Grace Wine Company Grenache Thompson Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

The color is quite pale ruby in the glass. There is some lovely lift and refinement to the nose while it also shows some noticeable stem inclusion. If you aren’t a fan of whole cluster, this may not be for you right now as that baking spice and herbal component is prominent before it gives way to tones of strawberries, bright red cherries, crushed berries, licorice, crushed rocks, some chalky notes, rose petals, spices, and wild flowers. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and fresh with a fleshed out mid-palate and silkiness that can come from the stem inclusion. The Medium+ acidity is mouthwatering and tension-filled while the Medium+ tannins have a round, but youthful quality to them. This is will likely need a few more years to let the whole cluster portions full integrate. The feel is super sexy already and I can certainly see this kicking it up a notch or so with another few years.
