La Conseillante and Angelus dinner

Introduction

A great evening with some excellent wines. The choice of different vintages and expressions was great. Starting with the excellent 05's the difference between both wines showed most clearly: Conseillante on pure cassis and violet notes (and a lot more underneath) and Angelus in a more robust, blockbuster style but with so much class... truly a great wine (and the wine of the evening for me). The difference in terroir showed for each flight of wines, with Conseillante showing more of pure fruit (again there is a lot more to it than just fruit) and Angelus in more of a blockbuster style, with more earthy tones and leather, reglisse.

I must say that personally, I preferred the Angelus wines we had this evening, although I understand that others prefer La Conseillante.

  • 2005 Château Angélus 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Impressive blockbuster wine. Evolves tremendously in the glass, the last sip was divine.

  • 2005 Château La Conseillante 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    Pure cassis and violet. Finer than the Angelus at this stage, less impressive maybe, but a great wine.

  • 2000 Château Angélus 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Great showing, again blockbuster wine, practically on par with the 05. See others for extensive notes. Still too young, needs at least 7 years to open up, if not considerably more.

  • 2001 Château La Conseillante 91 Points

    Probably the most balanced wine we had this evening. Again with the pure cassis tones and some secundary aroma's. Less 'impressive' than the 05's but more enjoyable.

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Again a blockbuster, with so much poise, class, length. Still too young. I really like this wine.

    The only wine we had that was really ready to drink. Again the pure cassis notes, with cedar box, leather, reglisse.
