Introduction

Anne brought the two first wines, Samu the last wine. I tasted double blind.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2003 Bodegas AAlto Ribera del Duero AAlto 84 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Decanted for an hour, tasted double blind. Appearance: a rather dark red with a brownish tinge to the edge (5/5). Nose: a very fruity nose of cassis with quite a bit of vanilla coming through. After some air time, the vanilla notes changed to toasty oak (11/15). Palate: aargh, huge oaky palate with a huge wall of tannins. Bitter fruits coming through, reminding me of grapefruit. Some more rich fruit in the back, but not really coming through. This is definitely not my style of wine (12/20). Overall: I was quite disappointed when I found out this was an Aalto, I was considering buying to try it out, now I know I don't have to (6/10).

  • 2007 Ca' del Baio Dolcetto d'Alba Lodoli 85 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba

Decanted for an hour, tasted double blind. Appearance: quite a light red with a violet tinged edge (4/5). Nose: light red berries like strawberries and rasberries in the fore. Also a distinct smell of tea coming through. Quite reticent (11/15). Palate: hmm, very light bodied, with red berries coming through quite distinctively, some tannins. With more air, the berriness becomes more obvious, with red cherries and rasberries (13/20). Overall: quite pleasant, although not very memorable (7/10).

  • 2007 Sula Vineyards Shiraz 84 Points

    India, Nashik

Decanted for an hour, tasted double blind. Appearance: an inky, impenetrable black colour (4/5). Nose: whoa, what is this?! Smokey, tar, smoked bacon, where is the fruit?? A very interesting nose (11/15). Palate: the same follows through in the mouth, burnt rubber, tar, smoke, only a bit of fruit in the background. Heavy duty stuff, even though there are no tannins to speak of (12/20). Overall: ahh yes, once revealed I remembered what a Sula Shiraz tastes like, like this! Spicey stuff, could be a characteristic of Indian terroir?? An interesting wine for sure, an oddity if you want to surprise your wine loving friends (7/10).

Closing

Quite an enjoyable evening, with all three wines being interesting for me. The Aalto was again a wine of some cult status that fortunately I don't need to get any of!
