Introduction

First we had a lecture from Professor Attilio Scienza, most of which I missed. Daniela Scrobogna and the Prof led the tasting -- single blind. I quickly picked the South African and Californian, and should have easily picked the Dagueneau but didn't. The two Italians were similar to each other and to the NZ. There was a three-way split on the "best" wine: Alto Adige, NZ and Loire. For me, the Dagueneau was compellingly superior.

  • 2007 San Michele Appiano (St. Michael-Eppan) Sauvignon Sanct Valentin 91 Points

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol

    Pale straw. Perfectly typical, intense and unmistakably SB on nose and palate: grass, citrus, gooseberries, minerality, a little floral and a little vegetal (in a good way). Very flavourful, fully dry, nice/crisp acidity, moderate alcohol. Fairly long and complex. Like it a lot. My second favourite of the tasting.

  • 2006 Beringer Vineyards Sauvignon Collection Fumé Blanc 85 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Pale straw. Not nearly as intense as #1; sweet stone- and tropical fruits, wood, toasty and slightly smokey. Dry, soft acidity, rounder, flat. Simple.

  • 2007 Volpe Pasini Friuli Colli Orientali Sauvignon Zuc di Volpe 86 Points

    Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Colli Orientali

    Pale straw. Lots of typicity and intenisity like #1, with citrus, some tropicals; slightly reductive. Fully dry, acidic, sulfurous bite that blew off, big minerality (sasso chiaro), austere. Fairly simple but would be good to accompany a rich seafood meal.

  • 2006 Didier Dagueneau Silex 95 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

    Pale straw. On nose, touch of sweet oak and vanilla, honey, gooseberries and some tropical notes; a little reductive. On palate, so flavourful and minerally, crisp/bright acidity, very long and complex. Love it. WOTN!

  • 2006 Fleur du Cap Sauvignon Blanc Unfiltered 80 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    Pale straw. Sweet fruits to start, but they faded fast. Very grassy and vegetal (not in a good way), grapefruit and salty minerality. Very acidic. Not ripe fruit, not nice flavours.

  • 2006 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 90 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

    Pale straw. Not screaming with varietal character; could easily be confused with a Riesling or other aromatic white. Bright, young, fresh fruitiness in the background; big minerality, even saltiness in the foreground; lemongrass. Fairly long and complex. I like it.
