Introduction

Great opportunity to have a deep dive into the wines from this often overlooked commune from nearly a quarter of a century. Between we had many more options than could be examined but a theme we might well revisit in future.

Flight 1 - On arrival (1 Note)

Flight 2 - With cold cuts (2 Notes)

  • 2014 Le Grappin Savigny-lès-Beaune Blanc 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

Served with a 2022 of the same wine. More reduced that it’s younger sibling. Wheat cracker and lemon oil on the complex nose. Palate has racy acidity and lovely structure. Lasts a full 20 seconds after swallowing, touch of steely minerality on the very finish. Yum

  • 2022 Le Grappin Savigny-lès-Beaune Blanc 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

Richer that the 2014 of the same wine this is served with. Nose has honeysuckle, chamomile and a touch of beurre blanc to it. A touch of pineapple stalk greenness and cashew with air. Palate has a citrusy profile with that touch of richness and lower acid profile than the older wine. Good stuff.

Flight 3 - With cold cuts (2 Notes)

Flight 4 - With slow cooked pork shoulder ragu and manfredine pasta (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Bouchard Père et Fils Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

Lovely mature Savigny; forest floor, plum fruit and a couple of ppm of balsamic in the margins. Savoury palate has a touch of earth alongside the dark fruits, lovely tannins and acids. Very much alive.

  • 2002 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

A little wilder than the Bouchard 1999 Lavières this is served with. There is a touch of hung feathered game and ripe plum and cranberry fruit at the core with a little mocha in the margins. Palate feels more mature than its older flight mate. Some meatiness and a touch of chestnut brazier. Tannins fully resolved. Right up my Straße.

Flight 5 - With slow cooked pork shoulder ragu and manfredine pasta (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

A little stinky on opening this cleans up with a little Audouze airing. Smoky character to the fruit on the nose here; a touch of cassis, toasted marshmallow and Assam tea. Palate feels fully mature perhaps in gentle decline but still very enjoyable. Think others found this more in their sweet spots.

  • 2010 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

Fresher and darker fruited that the 2002 this is served with. A touch of Biscoff crumb alongside the plum fruit. Palate is lovely; tannins resolving but still framing as they should. Acids and plum / cherry fruit and a twist of clove.

Flight 7 - With slow cooked pork shoulder ragu and manfredine pasta (2 Notes)

Flight 8 - With a selectio of British and French cheeses (2 Notes)

  • 2017 Mongeard-Mugneret Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Narbantons 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

Modern, almost a touch of mintiness on the plush nose. A touch of Rooibos but almost Rooibos pastille rather than a mere watery tea! Palate a whisker tauter and leaner than the 2018 this is served with (but I really like both).

  • 2018 Mongeard-Mugneret Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Narbantons 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

Again plush and as others have noted in the house (generally Côtes de Nuits) style. Plum fruit with some Bakewell notes a little twiggy. Palate rich and with a lovely savoury meatiness. Good acids too. Do like this cuvée.

Flight 9 - With a selectio of British and French cheeses (1 Note)

  • 2007 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Banana toffee with some offsetting yoghurt coated cashew lactic savouriness. Real savoury / sweet tension on the palate. Do like this house.

Flight 10 - Unnecessary digestif (1 Note)

Closing

My scribblings have more than an element of speed dating to them given I was in and out of the kitchen for most of the evening! Thanks to the team for their great company and terrific wines. Some of these producers and terroirs have been at the heart of the wonderful Bromley Wine Circle since its inception almost twenty years ago.
