Introduction

The tasting menu at Meritage (with some adjustments for our Red Rhones) was amazing - and amazingly priced.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2015 Roederer Estate L'Ermitage Brut 92 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Quite solid. This sparkler has a profile that strongly resembles Champagne. The give-away is the almost sweet robust fruit that you rarely if ever find in the Champagne region. Really great qualitatively.

  • 2015 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Robust and toasty. Powerful while also being effervescent.

  • 2014 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Sadly this was quite oxidized. Still drinkable but not showing like it should. The gentleman that brought it claimed that a recent bottle was in great shape.

  • 2014 Château de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel Blanc 89 Points

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

Served blind, this was a classic White Rhone profile. The nose has peaches and flowers. The palate is a bit angular and challenging. My guess was something like "a typical and correct White Rhone that is quite nice, probably from a good producer, but nothing outstanding like a VV or a Chave". I think I guessed correctly.

  • 2005 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Classic and classy CDP. somewhat rustic with anise and underbrush. Leather, funk and garrigue. Drinking well now. This makes me think that I should be buying from this producer.

  • 2012 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Secret des Sabon 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

I knew it would not be ideal to serve this alongside 2005 Le Vieux Donjon, but that's what the table wanted. This wine is not traditional, rather modern and flashy with blueberry fruit and violets. Having said that, it is delicious and this 4th bottle is typical.

  • 2017 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie Améthyste 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Robust fruit with leather and flowers. Quite herbal and tasty. I'm looking forward to following this producer with the bottles that I have.

  • 2007 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This did not stand out to me. I think 2007 CDP is a mine-field and while this isn't a mine, it's maybe a miss. Sell.

  • 2012 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

I found this to be drinking surprisingly well for its young age. Perhaps thats because this was supposedly a "cooler" year. Fairly classic if fruity CDP with good typicity. I'd be happy to own or drink this.
