Introduction

Supper at the Kenzo Estate restaurant and then, after the slightly disappointing food and wine, off for a very nice bottle of burgundy at a BYO.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2021 Kenzo Estate Suzu

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Plum, cherry, damson, a little leafy underpin. Crisp mousse on the palate, fresh but the fruit only appears the end of the finish with a boiled sweet note. Plenty of grip here as well.

  • 2024 Kenzo Estate Yui

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Cherry with a little peachy (?) note. Slightly tart on the palate, plenty of talc textured burr, fresh, simple.

  • 2021 Kenzo Estate Cabernet Franc Asuka

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Plush oak water; vanilla, sweet spice, caramel up front on the nose, red berry fruit behind this and it is reflected on the palate, cedary, woody tannins, alcohol warmth on the finish, oaky flavours, muted fruits. Meh.

  • 2024 Kenzo Estate Sauvignon Blanc Asatsuyu

    USA, California, Napa Valley

fresh gooseberry, a little green apple underpin, pinch of sweet spice, from the oak. Nice controlled nose. It's a little soft on the plate, gooseberry, green apple, touch of textured, no intrusive alcohol warmth. Okay

  • 2022 Kenzo Estate Rindo

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Red and blackcurrant, sweet spice , alcohol prickle, plum, polished oak is controlled but has a slightly resinous underpin. Oak grows with more time and air lending chocolatey notes. Juicy fleshy and that oaky note is in charge on the palate. Bah.

  • 2021 Kenzo Estate Murasaki

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Plum, blackcurrant, plain chocolate, sweet spice from the oak and a little leafy underpin. Oaky palate, drying texture is slightly granular, alcohol warmth, flavours just about present and as per the nose.

  • 2024 Kenzo Estate Muku

    USA, California, Napa Valley

ooh, I though it was going to be a botrytised wine but it smells and tastes very much like a late harvest. A bit lean and skinny but probably only because of my shattered expectations; moderately pointy acidity and plenty of residual sugar. My head was in the wrong space for this. it was matched to a chocolate dessert which was no match at all.

  • 2017 Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Roncières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

Autumn fruit berry compote, slight bacon fat, integrated oak offers a little spice. Juicy, fleshy and the palate offers more of the same, fruit core, tacky tannins, with time a little red fruit cordial. So much nicer than every other wine we had on the night. Yummo.

Closing

Lovely evening with Atsushi...we realised the upstairs restaurant and the Burgundy was where we should have been all night...
