Introduction
A very educational Meunier tasting with wines that showed very differently. Unfortunately (for my wallet) the ‘16 Prevost turned out to be the favourite, with the Herbert and Chartogne-Taillet being the other standouts.
2020 Laherte Frères Champagne Rosé de Saignée Extra Brut Les Beaudiers 90 Points
France, Champagne
Disgorged Dec 2023, between 0–5 g/l dosage. Slightly sweet red lingonberry notes at first, which became lighter and more lifted with air. Not the most complex wine in the lineup; think Les Crayères is still the most complete of their cuvées.

2020 Champagne Herbert & Co. Pinot Meunier 1000% 92 Points

Similar to previous impressions. Crisp, linear citrus fruit this time rather than the strawberry fruit that I got before (so much so that I might have guessed Chardonnay if I didn't know this was a Meunier). Distinct salinity that made me fairly confident it was a Herbert. Superb for me but for clearly made for more classic palates.

2019 Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Les Barres 92 Points

Disgorged Jan 2024, 4.25 g/l dosage. Initially a little quiet but developed wonderfully with air, this really needed time in the glass. The red-fruited profile made me think of Perrine Fresne initially but the signature Chartogne balance showed with air - rich yet driven by bright acidity. Pleasurable as always.

2017 Jérôme Prévost Champagne La Closerie Extra Brut Les Beguines 92 Points

Rather oxidative initially, which we surmised from oak use or extended lees contact that made me think Dehu. Improved significantly with air that made me say that this would be very impressive if it was a Dehu but wasn't surprised when it turned out to be Prévost. Distinct Meunier character that wasn't present in the Herbert or Chartogne-Taillet.

2020 Perrine Fresne Champagne Premier Cru Extra Brut Les Basses Croix Sermiers 90 Points

Disgorged 7 Feb 2025, 1 g/ dosage. Clean and linear with some reduction. Utimately a little underwhelming as this was technically sound but lacking excitement. Said that this along with Dehu made for a rather boring flight (before they were unveiled).

2018 Déhu Père & Fils Champagne Cuvée La Rue des Noyers Extra Brut 88 Points

Disgorged 19 Dec 2022, zero dosage. Rich, dense, and quite oxidative in style. A rather foursquare champagne despite the tropical fruit that made it most distinctively Meunier in the line-up so not surprised when it was revealed to be Déhu.

2016 Jérôme Prévost Champagne La Closerie Extra Brut Les Beguines 94 Points

WOTN for most including myself - when blinded most includingmyself said wow this was clearly a step up from the previous flight. Golden in colour, with a rich profile but unlike the Dehu that came before this had energy and complexity. Wonderfully layered red fruit without any hint of mousiness, this was Prévost at its best.

2019 Emilien Feneuil Champagne Les Ruisseaux 93 Points

My contribution. Disgorged 12 Apr 2022. Interestingly, most of us incuding myself initially guessed this was Prévost as it showed very similarly to the real Prevost in the same flight with a golden hue and layered complexity. Thought this was older though with more overt oxidative notes but it was less natty than the Pinot Noir that I tried previously. Very impressive overall but not sure about the price point.

Wild strawberry fruit on nose and palate with well-judged oak use that reminded me of Georges Remy's very serious CC red. Better on entry than the finish but overall very enjoyable.

2023 Maison Leroy Beaujolais-Villages Primeur 87 Points

Guessed young, natural Burgundy because of the sweet, candied fruit. My first instinct was Bastian Wolber (which in hindsight wasn’t a terrible guess). Sweet bubble gummy fruit without any complexity, these Maison Leroys are a truly a waste of time.
