Introduction
Casual Pinot (or Nebbiolo, but no Nebbiolo turned up) night but some heavy hitters showed up. Felt that most wines showed well but Cathiard was the standout WOTN for me (and a few others) without a shadow of a doubt.
2020 Salima et Alain Cordeuil Champagne Altitude 320m Brut Nature Flawed

Really appreciated the honesty of the merchant who brought this and openly noted that the wine showed a touch of mousiness. Only slightly present on the finish but the pandan note was detectable. Otherwise, this was impressive with vibrant red fruit and plenty of energy.

2007 Tarlant Champagne Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut La Vigne Royale 89 Points

A robust, rather masculine champagne that felt quite tight, even though it showed more development than my Hébrart. Not as giving or impressive as the rounded and complete ’02 L’Étincelante that I tasted previously.

My extra. Open-knit red fruit with a touch of cinnamon spice and well-judged dosage. Someone guessed Vilmart which I thought was an excellent call stylistically. Rich and creamy without being overdone, this is always an outstanding value. (Also opened this earlier to share a little with some colleagues who all really enjoyed it).

2023 Domaine Dupont-Fahn Bourgogne Blanc Chaumes des Perrières 92 Points

Remarkably impressive for its level. Really interesting backstory as the grower added gravel/topsoil that raised the elevation of the site by about a foot, which meant the wine could no longer be classified as Meursault. The soil had been moved up from a lower-lying parcel (with permission), but neighbouring growers later complained, resulting in the vineyard being declassified from 1er Cru Perrières (this sits just across the road from Coche’s MP). Reductive nose with a new-school linear, high acidity approach with superb tension. Drank way above its price point unsurprisingly.

2015 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 90 Points

Showed a distinct cola note and tangy cherry fruit. Noticeable advancement which made me guess late '00s US PN. In hindsight, the description fit a warm vintage Bertheau.

2014 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 94 Points

Wow such a complete wine but had distinct VA and tannins that I initially guessed top Nebbiolo. When revealed to be a Burgundy I guessed '15 Chambolle. Got better and better with air as it revealed superb intensity and purity of dark red fruit for its level. Clear WOTN for me (and a few others that I surveyed).

My contribution. Similar impressions to the last bottle, showed like a cool-climate Pinot that divided the table between Burgundy and new-world. Still had the savoury, slightly rustic dark cherry fruit but definitely more advanced, wouldn’t hold this for much longer.

Brought for a friend, most couldn't place this. Unfortunately showed some brett on the nose, but the palate was vibrant and energetic. Still largely primary in its fruit profile with clear potential but as usual with Marguet it can be a lottery to age

2022 Wasenhaus Spätburgunder Möhlin 92 Points

Initially I thought this was Burgundy but once it was revealed that one wine in the flight wasn't Burgundy I thought it was obvious this was the outlier German (with some knowledge of the merchant that brought this). Restrained but slightly carbonic that was similar to Bastian Wolber, but felt this was much more pleasurable and less structured compared to the producer's other cuvees. Very drinkable in an immediate way.

2023 Gérard Mugneret Echezeaux 93 Points

I initially preferred the Wasenhaus out of the pair, but with more time in the glass it became clear this was the far more serious wine so I guessed this as the Burgundy (though I didn’t realise quite how serious at the time). It was finished by the time I wanted to revisit but plenty of GC stuffing, a clear improvement over the earlier vintages of this producer that I’ve tried.

Slightly more advanced than I expected with a slightly oxidative soy sauce note that initially led me to think Nebbiolo. When it was revealed to be Pinot Noir, I was quite confused why others said that it wasn't Burgundy so I said that if this wasn't Burgundy I might as well stop drinking Burgundy altogether. Guessed '08 Chambolle from a classic producer given the slight advancement and floral profile, some herbal notes and tea-like tannins on the palate so would drink up.

2024 Savaterre Pinot Noir 92 Points

Attractive reduction on the nose but too fruit-forward on the palate that made it an easy guess as a new-world made in a Burgundian style. Admittedly very enjoyable with obvious stemmy spice so I thought By Farr, but Savaterre made sense since I had previously guessed this producer as old-world when blinded. Quite singular in how it straddled both new- and old-world.

2015 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers 92 Points

Pretty, floral red fruit with superb lift (but slight alcohol on the finish) so I guessed ’09 H-N; the producer was easy to identify stylistically albeit I thought it was a Vosne village as it didn't show much intensity or depth. NSG made sense as it did have som rusticity but still one of the more enjoyable wines in the line-up.

Dark blueberry fruit that was tightly coiled, nowhere near as giving as the superb '18 last year. Really unfriendly and a distracting onion note emerged with air.

Very classic Fourrier with lifted, fresh (but slightly dark) strawberry notes. Not a big fan of the jammy tendencies in 19 and surrounding warmer vintages but this managed to elevate the humble Bourgogne classification even though I am not entirely convinced about its QPR.
