A two day extravaganza of bordeaux wines tasted free at Crystal.

Flight 1 - Right Bank (5 Notes)

  • 1997 Château Troplong Mondot 79 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Nice deep violet colour. Wet cherry puree with greenish tinge...a bit smelling like a smelly old cab. Sadly, there was some wet cardboard and diluted soy sauce notes on the palate. This is almost falling apart and just over the hill.

  • 2004 Château Grand Corbin-Despagne 83 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Medium red. Hint of indian flowers, hint of red dates, hint of green capsicum. Nic comfortable structure with decent plummish fruits. Quite elegant.

  • 2004 Château Lucia 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Strrawberryish, blueberrish and some sweat? Displaying some finese with burg like bitter roots supported by a squeeze of red fruits. Interesting wine with a long lingering ginseng root herb tea on the finish.

  • 2005 Château Quinault L'Enclos 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Deep purple red. Dried earth with touches of spice and sandalwood. Good juicy round purple fruits and some raspberries and strawberries adding some flavour too. Not exactly complex but really has some good fruit. This will last.

    Mini oppulent nose that is slightly inkish with hints of mocha toast and sweet baygon chemical. Dark plummish fruits with toasty notes and sticky tannins. Mid length. This is okay.

Flight 2 - Pauillac (5 Notes)

  • 1999 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    I adore the nose. Burg smelly "ass" like a basket of blackberries and blackcherries sweltering in a car boot parked under the hot afternoon sun. To add complexity, there are some animal notes and a dash of raspberry sweetness. An enveloping body of dark red fruits, shavings of capsicum, some spice box, cigarette box. Despite the extraction in the fruits, this still has lovely elegance.

  • 1999 Château Pontet-Canet 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Lovely red with some age showing on the brim. Lovely nose of sweet cherries, strawberries and stewed red dates with something animal in it too. Though not as full as the 99 Pichon Baron, this is an elegant wine with more greeness on the palate but also has enough half-dried strawberry fruit to balance off.

  • 2003 Château Clerc Milon 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Perfumed violets and other small blue flowers with blueberry fruit. The sweetness of dark blueberry fruits tell of the hot vintage. Very pretty palate. Like a dainty prim and proper girl with pigtails that also has quite good figure.

  • 2005 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Réserve de la Comtesse 79 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    A bit sultry on the nose with just one shoulder strap unloosed. Exotic incense and sweet blue flowers. Extremely approachable now with lots of ripe blueberry pie but lacks some acid and structure. Finishes short.

  • 2001 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 83 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Coffee laced with some stewed cherries, strawberries and some dates. Sadly, it is just a little too intermittent on the palate although it does carry some nice ripe stewed cherries and berries. Does have noticeable green peppers from the mid to end. Finishes with powdery tannins.

Flight 3 - St Julien (5 Notes)

  • 2002 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 82 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Obvious greeness of capsicums and veggies on the nose. Palate is fresh but still typically green. I would prefer some cat's pee or animalistic notes to add more kick to see it develop into something more interesting.

  • 2001 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) 81 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Dark cherries with some cabbage and a touch of cat's pee held up by some alc. Amateurish balance with detectable heat. There is enough fruit, enough acidity and just enough structure. However, this does not look like it will develop into anything interesting.

    Spice box and gun smoke fumes. Dense dark fruits with teeth staining powdery tannins. Decent.

  • 2002 Château Branaire-Ducru 84 Points

    Perfumed violets, dark berries and a line of earthy tone running through the middle. good fresh red fruits with nice acidity and substantial tannins to see it last. This is more voluptuous than the other St Juliens at the tasting.

    Quite an appealing nose of cologne. Comfortable and petitely dressed lady which you wouldn't mind sitting down to have an innocent chat with. Nothing more, nothing less.

Flight 4 - Margaux (6 Notes)

  • 1998 Château Giscours 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Slightly stewed nose of cherries, indian flowers and spices. A bit of burg "ass" too. There is a similar thread between this wine, th 99 Pichon Baron and the 99 Pontet. A stew of cherries, strawberries, green peppers and cabbage. There is some lovely sweetness of hawthorne flakes. Lovely wine displaying finese and elegance.

  • 2004 Château Prieuré-Lichine 83 Points

    Candied violets lifted by capsicum but this is not at all green. Sweet berries with good fruit and slight bitter herbs on the finish. Lovely drinking now but not complex. However, this is almost a crowd pleaser.

    Sweet nose of marchiano cherries and cotton candy. Slightly artificial too. Do I smell cockroach legs? Sweet dense ripe black fruits with a swirl of mocha. Very sweet and one dimensional.

    Black fruit pie but a very interestingly complex one with just a bit of cat's pee. Mocha notes and burnt tyres follow on the back. This has very good pure dark fruits that show potential. Heavy tannins but not bruising.

  • 2004 Château Lascombes 86 Points

    Dark purple. Dark berry covered in coffee flavoured toffee cream. A very powerful nose. Elegantly delivered power of black fruits with hints of coffee oak, substantial fleshy fruits and acid to keep it going. Cheek pinching tannins that will see it go on for another 8 years.

  • 2002 Château d'Issan Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Some candy but it does smells tainted with wet cardboard. there is some green capsicums but this wine is either badly ripened, very underripe or its tainted. 73 pts if the style was supposed to be as it tasted.

Flight 5 - Others (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Château La Lagune 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    Very concentrated and lifted nose of indian spices, violets and some herbaceous nuances. Dense dark fruits showing a lot of power and potential. Some smoky undertones and heavy but not bruising tannins. This shows quite a bit of elegance and complexity.

  • 2003 Château La Lagune 84 Points

    Green capsicums and steminess. This doesn't quite display the over ripeness and heat of the vintage. In fact, this is nicely ripe with just the right amount of structure and fine powdery tannins.

    The most green capsicums I have smelt among the wines of the tasting. Also has cat's pee and smoky cherries. Lightish palate that is with decent fruit and length but not all that impressionable.
