  • 2002 Delamotte Champagne Blanc de Blancs Millésimé 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    A simple opener, as it was related to me, except nothing simple about this cuvee - perhaps relative to what was about to come but still a gorgeous drink. Fresh with youthful verve and electricity. Green apples, fresh apricots, straw, baked bread and chrysanthemum dominate the bouquet. Palate is zippy with depth and energy - really enjoyable today with loads of runway.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Brut Rosé 94 Points

    France, Champagne

    Disg 23. Showing a little tired next to the ‘20 disg Substance but a gorgeous drink nevertheless. Thought this was a blanc de noir and didn’t think to go rose. Red apples, cherry skins, hawthorn, mulberries and a tinge of incense dominate the bouquet. Palate felt a little older but still retained waves of pure fruit alongside layered depth and complexity. Held all the way to the end of dinner and was showing brightly at the end of it.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Substance 95 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    Disg '20. Next to the ‘23 disg Rose, this showed a ton of filigree and allure. Nashi pears, lychee, sudachi curd, butterscotch and corn husks on the bouquet. Palate has incredible depth and layers that kept unfolding with time in glass - this is one of those moments where there is so so much beneath the seemingly quiet surface. Truly glorious today and what a lovely showing! One of the best Selosse I’ve had.

    Utterly delicious and gorgeous! Old champagnes have complexity like no other and this was a perfect example. Superb intensity and power throughout with persistence through the midpalate and driving such a long finish.

  • 2008 Louis Carillon Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 97 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

    This was like heaven next to the under-performing Ramonet Batard. Bouquet showing superb focus and intensity, with sudachi zest, melon rind, honeydew, lemon curd, smoke and incense. Showing vintage typicity here with some leanness and bright acidity but alongside this was an incredibly energetic palate with gorgeous focus and complexity - I think this is easily the best Louis Carillon I’ve ever had.

  • 2005 Domaine Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

    Been meaning to pop this for a while now. Bouquet showing gloriously with lemon rind, barley, rice husks, pears, popcorn and custard. Palate however a complete disappointment - flabby, disjointed and awkward. Never really got going and never excited.

  • 2004 Etienne Sauzet Chevalier-Montrachet 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

    Insanely fresh and proof of perfect provenance really when oldest guesses were 2014! White peaches, nashi pear, lychee, straw, jasmine and lilies dominate the bouquet. Palate has superb purity and lift, while retaining a fistful of power on the mid-palate, before crisp acidity marks the finish - a nice little transition with layers playing so interchangeably. Thought this was Sauzet like but didn’t peg this for the chevalier immediately because the bringers were trying to sway us and said these were simple wines..

  • 2004 Domaine Michel Niellon Chevalier-Montrachet 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

    Niellon has kinda always struggled with premox and unfortunately this was not spared. A touch advanced, with honeysuckle, caramelised apples, olives, bruised pears and barley husks. Palate not spared, with fading intensity and a little lacklustre - density of the plot actually still discernible here but unfortunate oxidation has reared its ugly horns.

    I count my blessings, having tried this for the 3rd time now from the same owner. Showing very similarly to the previous 2 occasions, each with the same takeaway - “this is why chase old burgundy”, enough said.

  • 2007 Maison Leroy Meursault 1er Cru Bouchères 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    Intense bouquet with a mix of spices and wild fruits, preserved green plums, starfruit, lilies, chervil and limestone come together quite nicely. Palate does not have a ton of focus but has multi-layered depth, concentration and acidity on the backend. This lost out a bit with the Leflaive standing alongside but a very intellectual drink for sure.

  • 2007 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 96 Points

    Always a blessing when pre-14 Leflaive shines. Pierre morey’s winemaking is still my favourite era of Leflaive. Beguiling bouquet showing off fingerlimes, setoka oranges, meyer lemon curd, pear and chamomile. Palate was absolutely firing in terms of power and tension but a little lean and thinning out on the finish - probably vintage at play here. Nonetheless, have felt that 07 whites are superb and completely ready to drink now - though I’ve maintained that they have already been drinking incredibly for a few years

  • 1993 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet 100 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    Best Drouhin Montrachet I’ve had, and I already see this as being my top 3 white wines of the year. Dark yellow in Voss already telling of its age but the level of intensity and overwhelming power in the bouquet was next level. Popcorn, salted caramel, raw honey, pineapples, yellow peaches, setoka oranges, roasted barley, sage and incense on the bouquet at a god-tier level. Palate showing off plenty of depth and power, with almost an oily viscosity amidst a landscape of tropical fruits and bright acidity. Frankly, multiple deep breaths in and a sip later, I thought this was hands down D’auvenay. Incredibly gorgeous and a humbling experience.

  • 2021 Domaine Amiot-Servelle Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 96 Points

    Opened at 1pm and drank at 9pm. On a night where it was dominated by whites yearning to be paired well with sea urchin, this showed up to prove a point.. and a point did it prove!! Generous bouquet with pure red fruit - raspberries, bayberries and wild strawberries come to mind, supported by cloves, sage, violets and iron. Palate showing loads of filigree and concentration - one for the longer haul but very fine today (given air)
