Introduction
Terrific tasting of Emmanuel Brochet’s top cuvées. The wines showed a consistently deep golden hue with oxidative notes on opening, but benefited from time in the glass as they gained freshness and definition. Personally felt that the pair of ’13s stood out with a lovely balance between roundness and verve. Overall, thought the Meuniers displayed a touch more depth and had a distinct salinity that set them apart from the Chardonnays. A real treat to experience them side by side, especially with great food at Fragment.
2010 Emmanuel Brochet Champagne Les Hauts Chardonnays Extra Brut Millésime 93 Points

Excellent acidity and drive, preferred this to the '09 Meunier alongside but I was in the minority. Not very Chardonnay-like because it was mainly driven by red fruit, tasted almost like sparkling Fuji apple.

Most honeyed on both the nose and the palate even though it retained sharpness on both. Finished slightly sweet, overall felt this needed drinking up the most out of the line-up.

Superb drive and linearity, probably the most complex out of the Chardonnays today but just lost out to the Meunier in the same flight. Both '13s spoke to me in terms of style as they had tension and energy.

After the previous Chardonnays which were more red-fruited, this was more typical as this had more green fruit notes. Slightly underpowered after the superb '13 but still well-balanced.

Very similar to the '13 at first with driven, tensile citrus fruit with enough broadness. Liked this a lot at first but slightest hint of mouse developed with air.

The Meuniers showed greater complexity with distinct salinity consistently tonight, but this was slightly too oxidative and round for me on the palate. Overall crowd favourite for the majority otherwise.

Similar verve and drive to the '13 Chardonnay but a touch more oxidative and with everything (acidity, structure) more amplified. Lots of character and developed saline notes that become more pronounced with air. Very complete and the pair of '13s were my personal favourites.

Again quite similar to the Chardonnay from the same vintage other than being slightly sweeter - fresher and lighter in style compared to the vintages that could be interpreted as more dilute.

Unfortunately nothing like my last bottle, I didn't get the mouse on the nose at first but it was definitely present on the palate. With air the barley notes became more obvious. Colour was clearly cloudier than the rest of the wines.

Something of a unicorn. Made from leftover pressed grapes and blended across vintages from ’09 to ’19. Pale amber in colour, with a fortified profile showing notes of walnut and orange peel that reminded me of aged Sauternes. Very well-balanced and surprisingly drinkable.

100% Chardonnay. 70% 2021, 30% 2019 vintages. Disgorged Jan '25, 2g/l dosage. Clean, round citrus fruit on the palate, but rather dilute and lacked excitement. Not a particularly compelling combination for me.

My extra. Floral, aromatic nose with darker fruit tones on both nose and palate. Still quite structured with powdery tannins. Slightest hint of the Soldera but never threatened to reach the same level of elegance. Some sweetness on the finish which led some to accurately identify this as a Brunello. Probably would benefit from more time.

2024 Domaine Sogga Obuse Winery Chardonnay Vin Sans Chimie 93 Points

My extra. A touch of RS that was slightly obtrusive but quickly overtaken by the aromatic and slightly grassy nature which reminded me of Sauvignon Blanc. Very pure and precise with a hint of grapefruit. Not a classic Chard but always enjoy Japanese naturals for their clean nature.
