This pours medium to light ruby in the glass, with light bricking. The nose is classic left bank Bordeaux showing green tobacco leaf, old leather, dried dark cherry, sweet cedar, cuban cigar, gravel, butchered beef, sandalwood, and a lovely little floral whisper. The palate enters on tart and sweet red fruit with sweet cedar. The tannin is medium and acid is lightly tart and medium plus. The finish is just a bit clipped and slightly bitter which is the only thing holding this back. All in all, this is another outstanding showing from the 1983 Mouton. Aromatically stunning and very good on the palate. This is wide open and continues to drink nicely.
This pours deep ruby in the glass with light bricking. The nose is deep and rich with plum, cassis, vanilla, chalky crushed rock, purple licorice, cinnamon, pencil shavings, and charcoal. The palate enters on cassis, plum, and licorice, with medium tannin and medium acid. The finish lingers nicely built on the overt power of the nose. All in all, this is not surprisingly classic Latour with it's tightly coiled and powerful aromatics and palate presence. These always age incredibly slowly and given my preference for mature wine I think I'd like it more in the decades to come.

The nose is a little tight on opening but nicely reveals espresso, plum, violets, fennel, lightly stewed cherry, and a slightly odd apricot note that I can’t say I love. The palate enters on the sweet red plum, with silky low tannin and medium plus acid. The finish turns to anise and espresso with medium length. All in all, this bottle was a little behind others I've had. The odd apricot note and vaguely stewed fruit has me wondering about possible heat damage. Given the past great bottles I've had, I'm calling this a sub-optimal bottle.
