Introduction

Wanted to pop some big dog bottles with friends, and pulled some good ones from the cellar. Fun night!

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2019 Rasa Vineyards En Passant 93 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

4 hour slow ox. Amazing fruit with nice acidity and tannin. Black cherry and cassis fruit with tobacco and forest bramble. Drinking really well right now!

  • 2020 Cayuse Syrah En Chamberlin Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

Splash decant; Hugely funky and savory, this shows flavors of iodine, mineral, river rock, roasted meat, black fruit, and smoke. There is almost a briney flavor in the finish as well. Really interesting wine!

  • 2013 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Splash decant after a 3 hour slow-ox. The oldest wine in the lineup, this was fully resolved yet still showing some grippy tannins on the finish. Rich cassis fruit, pipe tobacco, earth, and dark chocolate. Much better showing than my first bottle, by far!

  • 2020 Faethm / Fingers Crossed Syrah Head Held High 96 Points

    USA, California

3 hour decant; Huge wine showing gobs of black fruit, scorched earth, espresso, and dark chocolate flavors. Amazingly lush in the mouth, with nicely integrated, smooth tannins. Outstanding juice!

  • 2018 Hewitt Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

4 hour decant; This one was still showing lots of structure after the lengthy decant, but still quite delicious. Love those dusty Rutherford tannins! Cassis, black cherry, tobacco, oak, and vanilla flavors. First time trying this producer, and I'm quite impressed!

  • 2017 Merryvale Profile 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

4 hour decant; A bit leaner on the fruit than the '18 Hewitt, this showed black currant and cherry fruit, spice, tobacco, and earth, with ample structure and drying tannins on the finish. Drinking well now with air, I think this has the stuffing to go another 10 years, easy.

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

  • 2017 Waters Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

Last bottle opened of the evening, my palate was shot by this point, but this was consistent with my prior notes. Always a crowd pleaser!
