  • 1997 Lillydale Estate Sauvignon Blanc

    Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

    Pale yellow, green too. Clear, bright. Intense lemon, lime, grapefruit. No oak. Medium acid, clean, dry finish, not overtly fruity. Not sweet, shortish finish.

  • 1995 Mountadam Riesling

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

    Clear straw yellow with green tinge. Pungent lemon with sone kerosene notes. Strongly acidi on the palate; lemon fruit extends to the mid-palate, hint of sweetness on the finish.

  • 1997 Balgownie Estate Chardonnay

    Deep straw yellow. Honey and peach nose, butter, oak. Vanilla flavours, reticent fruit. Full and round on the palate but riding on oak.

  • 1997 Yarra Ridge Pinot Noir

    Slightly murky crimson red. Mint, rotting vegetable, hint of H2S. Light-bodied palate, not much fruit evident, bitter character. Considered faulty by the group – some kind of spoilage here.

  • 1996 Barwang Shiraz

    Dark crimson/ruby colour. Rich berry fruit with blackcurrant and mint. Some coconut oak too. Moderate tannins, American oak, vague red fruit, short/medium dry finish. OK.

  • 1996 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon

    Deep ruby red. Cassis and capsicum. Oak too. Medium weight; tastes per nose, lots of acid & tannin apparent, fruit submerged. Good, wants time.

  • 1996 Stoneleigh Sauvignon Blanc

    (tasted blind) Pale straw colour. Grassy straw aromas, melon, no oak, sulphur. Weet fruit on tip of tongue, gentle acid, no oak, short finish (thought unwooded chard, or Verdelho, NZ maybe?)

  • 1996 Bollini Pinot Grigio Trentino

    (tasted blind) Pale straw, almost no colour. Closed nose, little aroma, dirty lime and apple hint? Tingle of acid on palate and a sense of sugar-derived presence without being sweet. Lacks body. Watery, short. (chenin blanc? Or Italy?)

  • 1994 Domaine de La Baume Cabernet Franc Cuvée Monsieur Aubert

    (tasted blind) Garnet red with a hint of age at the rim. Smoky burnt aromas, oak, coconut, earth. Old wood taste on palate. Oxidative quality. Mouthfilling but not in a good way. Grenache? Spain/France?

  • 1993 Torres Cabernet Sauvignon Penedès Gran Coronas Reserva

    (tasted blind) Crimson red, bright and clear. Pepper/spice nose with hint of mint. Quite light-bodied, with cherry fruit, dusty character, too many tannins rushing through. Insufficient fruit for structure (nasty Italian barbera? Dodgy Beaujolais?) Turns out to have 15% tempranillo among the cabernet.

  • 1994 Botobolar St Gilbert Flawed

    {cork, 12.6%} 80% crouchen, 20% riesling. Deep gold colour, cloudy. Rotten melon aromas, dark chemical, oxidised notes. Little fruit on palate, not much presence on tongue. Weight of oxidation. These guys were known for minimal sulphuring back in the day and it shows.

  • 1993 Mount Pleasant Wines Sémillon Elizabeth

    {cork, 10%} Bright, intense mid-straw with flash of green. Toasty aromas with lime overtones, bottle age characters. Developing, light weight body, all front and mid-palate presence. Catrus and lime. No oak. Disappointing short finish the only let-down.

  • 1997 The Rothbury Estate Chardonnay Cowra

    {cork, 13.5%} Mid straw colour. Butter, butterscotch and melons, but fruit at least dominates oak. Palate a mixture of light oak and butter; all malo characters. Medium acid, dry finish. Woody style.

    {cork, 12%} Straw yellow, green hint. Medium intensity asparagus, grass, straw. Hint of lemon also on the palate. Some medium tingly acid just clinging on; sits all on the front palate; fully mature.

    {cork, 13.4%} Bright, clear light yellow. Smells of dusty wood and butter with a faintly rancid hint. Melony fruit on the palate; seems clearer than the nose threatened. Good palate coverage, medium weight, medium length finish. 2-3 years is OK.

  • 1995 Cranswick Wines Shiraz

    {cork, 13.4%} Deep garnet red. Warm fruity berry nose with some minty character and integrated oak. Lightweight and fairly short palate though, with a dilute, oak-chip feel to it. Sits on mid-palate but without much interest. Drink soon.

    {cork, 12.2%} Vegetable, farmyard, rotten fruit. Soft palate tastes better than nose with some feral raspberry, but there’s a metallic tinge still and it finishes short. No cellaring here.

  • 1996 Joadja Vineyards Cabernet Malbec

    {cork, 12.4%} Deep crimson/red. A touch stalky and grassy; under-ripe asparagus, overlain with coconut oak. Blackberry fruit on palate, strong tannins which fade quickly, weakish mid-palate. Marginal cool-climate. Might lift over 4-5 years.

    {cork, 11%} Deep yellow/light gold. Rich apricot nectar, cumquat, botrytis. Fully sweet, mouthfilling, some acidity, intense apricot & honey. Luscious all round.
