Introduction

A wine flight where 3 wines were blind tasted. However one was unoftunately flawed and was not guessable.

Flight 1 - Whites (3 Notes)

Flight 2 - Reds with the meal (6 Notes)

  • 2012 Domaine Dujac Clos Saint-Denis 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru

Powerful and spicy and savory, yet fruit is not too dark & ripe. Slight violet. Savory, oak, orange, blueberry, iron, licorice. Med+ body, med acidity, med+ length, med+ intensity, profound complexity. Very ready now. Not powerful enough to go with pork trotter. Very slight roughness in texture but fruit wise no ripeness at all. 13% ABV. Excellent. WOTN for me. From core CSD plot + Chaffots & Caloere.

  • 2013 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Med+ body, med acidity, med+ length, med+ intensity, med complexity. Red currant, wild strawberry, cedar, chalk. Slight kirsch. Chalky tannins, nice purity of fruit. Went well with choco cake and choco ganache. 13% ABV. Just a bit of heaviness of palate but I liked this more than most people here today.

  • 2011 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux 94 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

Bell pepper, cherry, slight mushroom, savory, cedar. 12.5% ABV. So soft, silky and no funkiness on a rough vintage. Med body, med acidity, profound length, med intensity, med+ complexity. Wine with the silkiest texture today - Doesn't feel out of place among Pinot Noirs.

  • 2022 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Hauts-Doix 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

13.5% ABV. Nice perfume of rose petal. Oak, bright - red cherry, strawberry, vanilla, saline. Med body, med acidity, med length, med+ intensity, med+ complexity.

Fragrance felt like mini-Amoureuses but the texture is not as refined. Charming but too Oaky at the moment, drink 2032 onwards.

  • 2014 Domaine Ponsot Corton Cuvée du Bourdon 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

14% ABV. Nice perfume of wilted roses. Raspberry, leather, cedar, nutmeg. Very clean fruit, but lacking midpalate density. Med body, med+ acidity, med+ length, med intensity, med complexity. Despite lacking power, I liked this wine

Flight 3 - Blind Tasting (3 Notes)

  • 2015 Frank Cornelissen Magma Flawed

    Italy, Sicily, Sicilia

Blind tasted. Very bretty, savory, pepper, sour cherry, medicinal. Maybe brett refermented, heat damage? Was revealed shortly after since it was not possible to guess the wine.

  • 2023 Maxime Cheurlin Noëllat Gevrey-Chambertin en Champs 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Blind Tasted. Really fragrant fruit. Felt the phenolic ripeness of tannins hasn't reached maturity, very NZ like - guessed Central Otago, Burn Cottage top cuvee. Cherry, clove, oak, cinnamon. Med- body, med- acidity, med- length, med intensity, med complexity.

  • 2016 Bass Phillip Pinot Noir Premium 93 Points

    Australia, Victoria, Gippsland

Blind Tasted. Natural but not overly funky. Group called Groffier Chambolle as it tasted similar to the Groffier Les Hauts-Doix 2022 with similar intensity of New Oak of Groffier.

Red cherry, oak, vanilla, slight rhubarb. Very smooth texture. Med body, med acidity, med+ length, med+ intensity, med complexity. 13.2% ABV. Hint of sweetness.

Flight 4 - Bonus Wines (2 Notes)

  • 2018 By Farr Pinot Noir "Farrside" 92 Points

    Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong

Stemmy, no funk. Raspberry, oak, forest floor, rhubarb. Med body, profound acidity, med length, med+ intensity, med complexity. 13.5% ABV.

Tastes like Marsannay, still too sour. Still scored 92 as I'm not as adverse to acidity and effort was made to make a good wine. I assumed this was a very rainy vintage as it can be in Geelong.

  • 2011 Bouchard Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

PnP as the final wine and blind tasted by other guests. Rightly guessed as Bouchard or Jadot and when given the hint of 2011 and confirmation of Gevrey, correctly guessed as Chambertin or Clos de Beze.

Nice perfume, slight rose petal. Oak, strawberry, orange, slightly stemmy cinnamon. Very smooth, no funkiness and no green notes. Med+ body, med+ acidity, med+ length, med+ intensity, med+ complexity. Elegant like the Dujac CSD, its lacking the extra complexity but texture is more resolved and silkier.
