Flight 1 - Blind Tasting (2 Notes)

  • 2017 Domaine Prieuré Roch Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Le Clos des Corvées 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Blind tasted. Tasted natural yeasts, green herbal tinge, stems, cool toned fruits like from HCdN. Immediately called out Prieure Roch or Yann Durieux but was not given the confirmation. As the wine opened up, it changed and the funkiness went away and riper fruit appeared with more concentration.

    Guessed 2014 so I felt it might be Gevrey/MSD 1er. After reveal, millerandage fruit + cool vintage makes sense.

    Earthy, Cranberry, plum, cinnamon, balsamic, dried herbs. Med body, med+ acidity, med+ length, med intensity, med+ complexity. 12% ABV. Too much underripe fruit. I prefer the 2021 Corvees VV

  • 2007 Domaine Ponsot Griotte-Chambertin 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Blind tasted. Not very fruity. No funkiness, use of natural yeast quite obvious, but I'm not knowledgable enough to guess producer. Clean ripe toned fruit, so I guessed must be a midslope plot. From the ripeness and lack of acidity it felt like 2018 or 2009, but didn't have the complexity so I went with 2018 then calibrated to a lower midslope plot.

    Felt it was a softer CdlR but after that I was hinted that it's Gevrey. Had Mazoyeres and Chapelle Chambertin recently and it didn't taste similar so I crossed them out. So I guessed Charmes, Ruchottes, Mazis or Griotte.

    Med body, med- acidity, med+ length, med intensity, med complexity. Plum, game, savory, pepper. Slight violet. 13.5%. Good but not great.

    Yellow plum, melon, wet stone. Nice flavours, texture could be softer

  • 2021 Domaine Prieuré Roch Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Le Clos des Corvées Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Strawberry, fresh herbs, rhubarb, shiitake mushroom, savory, pink grapefruit. Stemmy and bright fruit. 13% ABV. Med+ body, med++ acidity, med+ length, med+ intensity, med+ complexity.
    Very clean flavours not very funky, this is one to age. Liked this one way better than 2017 Le Clos des Corvees tonight

  • 2014 Azienda Agricola San Giuseppe Rosso di Montalcino Stella di Campalto 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino

    Magnum bottle. Takes an hour to open - Still so juicy. Went well with dry aged Rubella Gallega. 13% ABV Natural yeasts used.
    Cherry, strawberry, leather, oak, earthy, orange. Slightly floral nose. Med+ body, med acidity, med+ length, med+ intensity, med+ complexity.
    Doesn't feel out of place in Pinot Noir (+Rayas) lineup, oak stood out compared to Burg. Still felt too early to drink since it's magnum bottle but for a normal bottle it may be more advanced.

  • 2007 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Wow funky. Black cherry, black plum, dried herbs, pepper, dried meat, game, smoke. Med body, med- acidity, med+ length, med+ intensity, med+ complexity. Went well with dry aged Rubella Gallega.
    The flavours are too ripe for me, very unlike typical Rayas. 2007 was a particularly ripe year and there's similarities to the many 2007 Beaucastels I've had. 14% ABV.
    Didn't taste like Pinot Noir. The meatyness makes me think it's Mourvedre but then Rayas is known to be 100% Grenache.

  • 2009 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    14% ABV. Ripe. Less ripeness but more concentration than the 2007. Forest floor, oak, blackberry, licorice, kirsch. Med+ body, med- acidity, med+ length, profound intensity, med+ complexity. Typicity of Grenache very apparent in this so it's not going to fool anyone into thinking it's Pinot Noir.
