    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Terlano

    This wine just perfectly shows how professional Cantina Terlan works, pure craftmanship to extract the maximum out of each and every vine. While it's not too expensive and of course not comparable to their premium wines, this is by no means "entry level house wine".
    It's 100% SauvBl from various vineyards (S/SW exposed, 280-580m altitude), hand-picked and left on the lees for ~8 months, of which 20% in big barrels. This enhances the wine and adds some body and complexity. Of course, the varietal characteristics show through as well: intense aromatics (passionfruit, lime, mint, grass), medium+ to high acidity. Bone dry. Nice minerality on the long finish. 91+

  • 2024 Cantina Terlan Sauvignon Terlano Quarz 93 Points

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Terlano

    Like indicated in some other TNs (older vintages), this is clearly the "big brother" of the Winkl Cuvee. It's 100% SB as well- but just brings a little more of everything. It spends 9 months on its lees (50% steel, 50% large oak barrel). This fact plus a bit higher alcohol (14%) make it fuller bodied and slightly creamy. Yields are lower, aromatics are more dense and intense, complex note spectrum of lime zest, grapefruit, elderflower, mango, melissa; chalky stone, some hazelnut and blanched almond. Dry, medium+ acidity. Saline and long finish, with some ageging potential. 93+

  • 2023 Cantina Terlan Terlano Nova Domus Riserva 93 Points

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Terlano

    Fantastic wine from Terlan as well; this one being 70% Pinot Bianco, 25% Chardonnay, 5% Sauvignon Blanc. Seemingly throws "the best of" each cuvee component in the mix, and then also the vinification contributes to the complexity: fermentation in large barrel, partly going through malo, 1y on the lees (in barrel).
    Resulting in broad range of aromatic notes; mainly getting peach, apricot, citrus, sage, white flowers, vanilla yoghurt. Precise and clear. The fruit and spices are in balance, both being literally carried by the underlying mineral notes. Dry, medium acidity, medium+ body, rather high alcohol ~14%, long finish. 93+

  • 2023 Cantina Terlan Terlano Terlaner I Primo Grande Cuvée 95 Points

    In brief, "this is to Nova Domus what Quarz is to Winkl", i.e. an upgrade in all aspects, but still same grape varieties, similar cuvee ratio (60% PB, 38 % Chardo, 2 % SB) and vinification method. All of this results in a *magnificent* white wine that has it all.
    Intense aromatics, high complexity and multifacetedness: grilled peach, red apples, pepper, pear, green spices, sanded wood. Sharp, high acidity countering the fuller body (14% abv). So well balanced, textured, and elegant. Incredibly long and salty finish. Deserving all the superlatives and a 95+; with a few more years in bottle it can easily crack 96.

  • 2013 Cantina Terlan Pinot Bianco Rarity 96 Points

    First reaction was "What the heck?" - never thought a Pinot Bianco can be THAT good. Without having tasted thousands of them, I'm rather confident this is one of the best PB in the world and pretty darn close to the maximum one can achieve from this variety.
    Only 3'300 bottles produced, low-yield, handpicked selected grapes from >500m of altitude and big diurnal shifts create an inredible aromatic complexity and length. Then it spends a total of 12y on the lees (1y big barrel + 11y steel tank), which make it round and creamy and even more complex. Never losing its piercing acidity and freshness though. Notes include green pears, white peaches, verbena, elderberry soda, blossom honey, buttermilk, limestone.
    Simply incredible and magnificent, can imagine this would be a beast in food-pairings. WOW.

  • 2023 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Chardonnay Quintessenz 91 Points

    Another one of these underrated cooperative wines from Alto Adige. This is a clean and precise Chardonnay, pretty expressive and with noticeable, but very well integrated oak notes (12months, around 40% new barrel). Nice, refreshing acidity and good length. Pretty mellow, fuller body, slightly too high in alcohol (14.5%) for my taste. Good balance of fruity and mineral notes on both nose and palate.

  • 2023 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Sauvignon Quintessenz 92 Points

    Compared to their Chardonnay, this is more fruit-forward, but also much louder in terms of aromatic intensity. Older/bigger barrels as well, hence less oak influence present. High acidity, very juicy. Battonage and lees ageing round it up nicely. Stone-fruit notes like peach and green apple dominate, some kiwi. Long and tickling finish.

  • 2020 Tiefenbrunner Chardonnay Riserva Vigna Au 95 Points

    Fantastic single-vineyard (1ha) Chardonnay. Smells rich and complex, with aromas of vanilla, hazelnut, honey and walnut from the oak ageing complementing the intensive fruity bouquet of candied orange, Golden Delicious apple, honeydew melon, pineapple. The riper aromatics are countered by pleasant acidity. 13.5% ABV, bone-dry. Long finish.

  • 2021 Tiefenbrunner Müller-Thurgau Alto Adige - Südtirol Feldmarschall von Fenner 96 Points

    Incredible wine - outstanding quality. Without a doubt, this is the best Müller-Thurgau I've ever tasted. From a 3 hectare, south-facing vineyard at ~1000m of altitude. Very complex and dense. Albeit not as loud on the nose, this shows some Riesling-esque qualities, especially on the palate. There it displays an expressive bouquet of notes, incl. peach, apricot, lemon extract and zest, green tea, sage, thyme, elderberry, osmanthus and jasmin flower. Fruity, mineral, and herbal - all in perfect balance. Dry with a high, but delicate & refreshing acidity. Very long finish. 95-96

    Fresh, fruity, clean. Salty lemon, green apple and grapefruit. A bit more refined and mineralic than most Pinot Grigio, but still rather linear and simple. Juicy and easy to drink, also without food. 88-89

  • 2023 Colterenzio Schreckbichl Pinot Bianco Riserva Berg 91 Points

    Fermented and aged (10 months) in barrel, producing noticeable secondary aromas of caramel and bitter almond. Increasing the complexity & the body as well. Juicy texture and concentrated, fruity notes of pear, red apple, and peaches. Dry. Medium acidity, wish it was a tad higher. Alcohol @ 13.5%. Medium+ finish. Feels close to peak now, likely holding for another 5, maybe 10y.

    Similar ballpark and style as Caldaro's 'Quintessenz': very intense and SB-typical aromatics. Light underlying oak spice and lees notes rounding it up. Screaming out of the glass, elevated acidity, long finish. Slightly more powerful, alcohol (13.5%) is perceptible. 91+.

  • 2023 Colterenzio Schreckbichl Chardonnay Lafóa 93 Points

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol

    Lovely Chardonnay from higher altitude / cooler microclimate, still resulting a bit fuller than I expected. The oak influence is present but not overpowering, just as for the malo/lees notes - something I noticed more and more producers from Alto Adige doing really well. The prudent use of these techniques is really an enhancenment for the wine, which otherwise has a fruity underlay that resembles an apple or pear tarte, with pastry and brown sugar notes. Moreover yellow apple and some citrus. Acidity is present, not spikey though. Dry, medium+ bodied. Long finish. Should work well with various foods.

    Not too cheap, but pretty darn good. Complex and intense blend of Chardonnay (~70%) and SB + PB.
    Full-bodied, but never too powerful since freshness, acidity and creaminess keep it in balance. Nice fruity spectrum (dried apricot, grilled lemon, acacia, honey) underlying the oak notes (hazelnut, almond mousse). Some mediterranian herbs and mineral notes as well. Dry, long finish. 93-94 with potential for more.

  • 2025 Kellerei Kurtatsch Chardonnay Alto Adige - Südtirol Caliz 89 Points

    An absolutely decent 'entry-level' Chardo of Kurtatsch. A bit riper fruit profile of pineapple, red apple, some banana bread, maybe also due to yeasty notes from lees-ageing. Partly oak-fermentation & calcareous soils adding some spiciness as well. Alc of 13.5% is not too burning, acidity a tad too low. Dry. Medium+ finish. Well balanced wine, also for aperitif or white meat dishes.

  • 2023 Kellerei Kurtatsch Alto Adige - Südtirol Amos 91 Points

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol

    High altitude blend of 5 varieties (CH, PB, PG = ca. 70%, rest Riesling and SB), spending 15 months on the lees in a large barrel. Oak hardly noticeable, however it does have a pretty vertical and mineral 'mountain air' spirit, but also some seriousness and weight (also 13.5% ABV). Aromatic intensity is solid, smelling and tasting of citrus, peach, apple peels, daisies/spring flowers. Dry, acidity medium, medium+ finish.

  • 2023 Kellerei Kurtatsch Chardonnay Freienfeld Riserva 92 Points

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol

    On the more opulent end, with riper and exotic fruit notes, enhanced by vinification (it does it 'all', i.e. barrique fermentation and 1y maturation, including malo, lees ageing, bâtonnage). 13.5% ABV. Slightly soft acidity keeps it in balance. A well-rounded, precise wine, pretty complex with a long finish and ageing potential.

  • 2023 Kellerei Kurtatsch Cabernet Franc Ventis 92 Points

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol

    Rather new release of the cooperative, based on 100% Cab Franc from a warm microclimate and well-drained soils. 1y in barrique as well concrete.
    I liked it: pretty tense, vibrant, interesting - I felt like this had identity and character compared to other more "generic" reds. Medium+ aromatics (lingonberry, strawberry, raspberry, pepper, rosemary, mint, sand). Tannins rather high, bone-dry, full bodied (>14% abv). Medium+ finish. Drinkable now, but should improve with few more years in bottle. 92+

  • 2022 Kellerei Kurtatsch Merlot Riserva Brenntal 91 Points

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol

    Oak-aged (1y barrique + some big barrel thereafter) Merlot from the warmer parts of the region. Consequentially, it does meet the stereotype of being lush, full-bodied, and alcoholic (14.5%). However, I liked how open and expressive it shows on the nose. Notes are showing ripe, dark cherries and berries, and some spices like clove, nutmeg, and pepper. Palate is 'consistent' with both expectations and nose, hence very approachable, warm, and round, lower tannins. The acidity is just high enough to keep the freshness. Flattens out into a more elegant, medium+ finish.

  • 2022 Kellerei Kurtatsch Alto Adige - Südtirol Freienfeld Cabernet Sauvignon 94 Points

    100% CS, which is not the bread-and-butter grape in this region and Kurtatsch will also produce it only in 'good' (warm) vintages. 2022 was apparently ideal and the CS riped out perfectly. Spent 1y in barriques and 9 month in large barrel, 1 more year in bottle.
    Would be interesting to put this in some Bordeaux left bank blind tasting.
    Beautiful nose, stout and intense, dominated by black berries, ripe plums and Mediterranean herbs (rosemary, thyme, bay leaf). Some cedar wood, lavender, pine needles. The palate is of high aromatic intensity as well, with generous fruit concentration. Dry. Present but not too astringent tannin. Medium+ acidity, long finish - pointing towards some good ageing potential.

  • 2023 Cantina Terlan Lagrein Porphyr 93 Points

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol

    100% Lagrein from 3 selected parcels (250-270m of altitude). Fermented and aged (18mth) in oak (33% new barrique), which is excellently integrated and adds complexity with notes of vanilla, chocolate, walnuts, coffee and cloves.
    Dark fruit dominant nose and palate. Certainly a powerful and full-bodied wine (14% alc). Very round and juicy already, but tannins can still soften a little bit, and hence improve on overall harmony. Dry, medium acidity, long finish.
    Still young, can definitely improve with few more yrs in the bottle.

  • 2023 Kellerei Cantina Andrian Lagrein Tor di Lupo Riserva 92 Points

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol

    Nice expression of oak-aged Lagrein (18m, new wood), similar in style to the Cantina Terlan Porphyr, although slightly more fruity and less earthy. Full bodied, lush and rich, with some 14%+ of ABV. Notes of blackberries, dark plums, bitter chocolate, Medium+ acidity keeps it fresh, tannins still a bit grippy, since it's certainly still too young. Will age beautifully and likely earn even more than 92.

  • 2022 Colterenzio Schreckbichl Lagrein Riserva Gries 92 Points

    Pretty comparable to Andrian's 'Tor di Lupo Riserva 22'. A very dark-colored, powerful and supple wine, although it has ABV below 14%. Intensive nose and palate, dominated by ripe and cooked black fruit, plums, dried cherries, coffee and bitter chocolate. 16m in oak, adding a touch of vanilla. Full bodied. Medium acidity and tannins, medium+ finish. Should pair beautifully to a hearty beef / lamb stew or brasato.

  • 2022 Castelfeder Lagrein Burgum Novum Riserva 91 Points

    Flagship red of the winery, nice expression of Lagrein from selected parcels and the warmer 2022 vintage. Full-bodied, rich, voluptuous, with dense, ripe fruit driven aromas of blackberries, plum pie, strawberry marmelade, vanilla, milk chocolate, some smoke. Spent 1.5y in small barrel and 1y in bottle. Softer and velvety tannins, medium acidity, bone-dry and high in alcohol. Finishes long. Should be a powerful crowd-pleaser and good food companion. 91+

  • 2022 Castelfeder Pinot Nero Burgum Novum Riserva 91 Points

    A tier below the single-vineyard line-up of Castelfeder, but nevertheless a high-quality Pinot Noir. Color is Pinot-typical, i.e. a bit more translucent with garnet reflexes, but the palet shows much more full bodied than you'd expect from those visuals. Alcohol > 14% vol, showing the warmer 2022 vintage, but successfully transmitting the nice and complex aromatics, which are dominated by red fruit like cherries and ripe raspberries, as well as some herbs + also some secondary notes due to the oak ageing (18 months, 50% new barriques). Medium+ finish. Could be just a tad more elegant and delicate to achieve even greater scores, but very good overall. 91+

  • 2022 Kellerei Nals-Margreid Lagrein Alto Adige - Südtirol Riserva Gries 90 Points

    A little more "spiky" compared to the other Lagrein Riservas, acidity a bit more prominent, tannins a little grippier. Fruit profile is a tad less ripe / more red fruit driven (like wild / forrest berries, currants). Oak a little less noticeable as well, albeit some soft cocoa aromas. 'Only' 13.5% alcohol, overall medium bodied but still remains in the "powerful"-category. Dry, clean & balanced, with a medium+ finish. 90+
