Introduction

Furbished farmhouse carved into the ridge; wines here were not in their best place, nor greatly differentiating; middle-of-road modernist; this is representative Serralunga though;

10ha of Serralunga, south-facing; steel fermentation, 20d maceration; temperature-controlled; steel malolactic then oak elevage using barrique and small botti, temperature-controlled; Margheria 24m botti, Vigna Rionda and Marenca half botti, half barrique; converted into domaine in 1993;

Flight 2 (4 Notes)

  • 2019 Luigi Pira Barolo Margheria 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    70y old vines, 340m, south-facing; 2y botti;

    In general I find Pira's MGAs too uniform, creamy and non-acidic. Margheria 19' is on low elevation and on calcareous clay but has a light smoky tannin, strawberries, cherries and some earthiness; peat on throat, some earth and pepper;
