40-year anniversary of the Wine Brotherhood

We celebrated on the day our 40-year anniversary of our wine-club we started as students. It is quite a feat and privilege to have known each other and tasted wine for such a long time. We had a great chef preparing fantastic food and we found some wines in our cellars to accompany the food.

• 2002 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 98 Points

  France, Champagne

  This is like Montrachet with bubbles. It is so vibrant and long with brioche, apple and citrus flavours. In perfect harmony and close to perfection while even a bit on the young side.

• 2002 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 98 Points

  France, Champagne

  Compared to the Salon we had just before, this is clearly darker fruited but with huge complexity and so many layers of flavours of flowers, bread, honey, nuts and much more. This is also on the young side and will drink and possibly improve for many years.

  Consistent with earlier note and in a very good spot now. Classic PYCM minerality and tension with its flinty, citrus, apple and white flower notes.

  It paired well with an asparagus dish with minerality and white flower, ripe apples and a hint of tropical flavours.

  Gorgeous and actually close to perfection with its deep layers of white and yellow fruit in total harmony and vibrant with its citrus, flinty and mineral backbone. It is really living up to its pedigree.

• 2001 Domaine Dujac Clos Saint-Denis 95 Points

  Intoxicating, deep and delicate pinot nose. A complete, classy, complex and very elegant wine with its underlying pure and intense fruit. Mature with earthy and sous bois notes. Very, very good.

  Smooth and balanced but with a lot of fruit and power underneath the hood with so many layers of complexity. A fantastic wine now that will possibly even improve or at least hold for ages.

  Fabulous Sauternes - really Yquem with the right acidity to match the sweet and luscious fruit. So much complexity with honey, orchard and citrus fruit. Huge.

  We had this after a fabulous d'Yquem 1997 which is a tough act to follow. The Rieussec is still a very fine full-bodied Sauternes on the young side with a fine balance. Intense with notes of honey, apple, peach, apricot and much more.
