Meursault Perrieres vs Puligny Folatieres dinner

Introduction

Organised a Meursault Perrieres vs Puligny Folatieres duel for the two top plots in their respective villages. MP had the higher average rating (7.11) compared to PF (6.64) excluding the flawed PYCM, but the near unanimous top wine was the Leflaive Folatieres. Rounding up the top three for me and most others was a toss-up between the PVG and the Lafon.

    Beautiful linear citrus fruit with some attractive reduction and saline character. More layered and complex than the '23 Puligny Folatieres alongside, but a step behind my top 3 for tonight.

  • 2023 Alvina Pernot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos des Folatières 92 Points

    Curiously sweet at first which made me place this correctly as '23 against the '22 MP. Oak use was more obtrusive with tropical fruit, but developed well with air to become more restrained and composed.

  • 2018 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières 95 Points

    Saline, precocious and delicious. Archetypical white Burgundy that was so immediate that it simply made people happy. Thought this was the Lafon because I expected Leflaive to be more reductive. Unanimous WOTN.

  • 2018 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 94 Points

    Quite reductive with plenty of tension and length that reminded me more of Leflaive than Lafon. Excellent but still quite coiled and youthful to the exuberant Leflaive tonight, but thought the pair was outstanding.

  • 2017 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières 90 Points

    Old-school with a broad oak frame. Slightly too rich and ripe which I found slightly boring and flat. By the invisible hand the least popular wine tonight (other than the corked PYCM).

  • 2019 Pierre Girardin Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 95 Points

    Wow this was brilliant. New-school style with both reduction and ripe fruit in an attractive way. Slightly sweet with butter pastry and popcorn but became more saline with air. Bought this in Hong Kong long before PVG became famous and hand-carried it back, so glad to have shared this because I was shocked at the market price today. Outstanding purity although I agree that this was a winemaker's wine.

    My white Burgundy epiphany was a 2012 Pierre Morey Meursault Perrières, but unfortunately have been disappointed whenever I have chased that high since (other than this same wine which showed well a couple of years ago). Too advanced and disjointed with excessive woolly notes. Good acidity but not much else.

    Wasn't sure what to expect but very impressed. Some sweetness, but also saline and well-balanced. Immediate and attractive, though not the most complex compared to the best wines tonight.

    Slightly old-school with the honeyed botrytis character expected of 2010 (i.e., rich and sweet with good age). Some spice with good minerality and length; real gravitas that you would expect in an aged Burgundy.

    Leftovers from a friend. Attractive spice with restrained, linear citrus fruit so guessed Carillon Puligny '17. Clearly from a good vintage but I did say we could all be wrong and and it could be a Lamy Saint-Aubin. Impressive.
