Introduction

For quite some time we had planned a small Le Chiuse vertical, ending with the legendary Riserva Diecianni 2010. Last weekend we finally gathered to taste through the lineup from one of my favorite producers in Montalcino.

Flight 1 - Starting with class! (1 Note)

  • 2023 Le Chiuse Rosso di Montalcino 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino

👃 Fresh cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry, herbs and flowers.
👅 Juicy, vibrant and incredibly enjoyable. Everything you could want from a young Rosso.

Flight 2 - Comparing two vintages (2 Notes)

  • 2015 Le Chiuse Brunello di Montalcino 95 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

👃 Crunchy red fruit, sweet cherry, violet and a balsamic lift.
👅 Already beautifully balanced, ethereal yet intense, with a finish of remarkable length.
It can age another decade but it's great to drink now.

  • 2013 Le Chiuse Brunello di Montalcino 94 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

👃 A bit more mature than expected (perhaps not a perfectly stored bottle), showing mature cherry, cranberry, earth, orange peel, coffee and cigar notes.
👅 The palate was the highlight: juicy, balanced, complex and with a pleasantly long finish. Wonderful today, though I wouldn't count on another decade of aging for this bottle.

Flight 3 - The queen, Riserva Diecianni 2010 (1 Note)

  • 2010 Le Chiuse Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Diecianni 97 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

👃 Everything you hope for from the Riserva Diecianni: raspberries, cherries, balsamic notes, mushrooms, wet leaves, earth and minerality.
👅 Simply complete. Incredible balance, great energy, fresh and mature fruit coexisting perfectly alongside beautiful tertiary complexity.
    🏁 An exceptionally long finish.

Flight 4 - Another view of Montalcino (1 Note)

Unfortunately we both had a Diecianni 2013 corked and an annata 2010 oxhidized...therefore I run out of Le Chiuse in my new house (many bottles are in the old one), so we went for a producer just I and another freind had.

  • 2013 Pian dell'Orino Brunello di Montalcino Vigneti del Versante 95 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Replacing a faulty bottle
👃 More powerful than the Le Chiuse wines, with darker and sweeter cherry fruit, balsamic notes, eucalyptus and flowers.
👅 Energetic and youthful, with tannins that are still firm and grippy, yet supported by good balance.
Great wine as well, even if a different style completely.

Closing

Overall, a fantastic experience shared in the perfect setting. If anything, I expected both the Brunello 2013 and the Diecianni 2010 to show a slightly younger profile, but that did nothing to diminish the pleasure of the tasting.

The wine of the day for me was undoubtedly the Riserva Diecianni 2010, one of my favorite bottles of the year so far. ❤️
