Introduction

Paul called up for a simple evening of good food and wine so we put this event up in a rush. However, the range of wines were still good enough.

Flight 1 - The simple lighter wines (2 Notes)

My first encounter with D'Esclans rose as well as second with Aligote.

  • 2007 Caves d'Esclans Whispering Angel 83 Points

    France, Provence, Côtes de Provence

    Rose petals, strawberries and cotton candy perfumes the senses. Sweet rose water with a good underlying minerality which makes this rose slightly special and unique. Absolutely luscious mouthfeel with staying power that lasts after an hour standing in the glass. This is no doubt a serious rose but feels to be making effort to connect to the masses by trying to crack a lame joke or two.

  • 2007 Guy Bocard Bourgogne-Aligoté Vieilles Vignes 80 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté

    Best described as a cross between a chard and a sauvignon blanc. This has obvious grassy guava flavours but carry a substantial amount of creaminess.

Flight 2 - The reds (2 Notes)

  • 2006 Guy Bocard Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru Rouge 81 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru

    Brambly floral notes with hints of earth. Pretty sweet morello cherries and crayola. Absolutely approachable now but might be lacking in acid structure to last.

  • 2004 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 84 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Sweet blackberry pie and violets on the nose. Slightly flabby on the sides and lacking some fresh acidity to lift the flavours but I suspect that is because it has already been opened for more than a day. However, I could still feel the power and lurking oppulence in the fruit and tannin structure that prompted me to guess the wine as one with good lineage. It has an enveloping mouthfeel which seems to be destined to accomplish great things but at the moment is stuck as being an out-of-favour prince. My points are given in retrospect to how good the wine must have tasted on the day before when it was opened.
