Flight 1 (17 Notes)

  • 2020 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Electrifying. Intense bouquet with pineapples, starfruit, sudachi curd, straw and lilies. Palate has superb concentration and focus - electrifying tension and intensity. While this will definitely do better with more time in bottle, this is already shockingly good today.

  • 2015 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos Vougeot 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Aromatic bouquet showing a little darker than typical HN. Black plums, bayberries, cocoa, aniseed, white pepper and violets on the bouquet. Palate a little burly, and lacked the sensuality and filigree of typical HN - perhaps a grumpy teenager still that needs more patience and time to grow up.

  • 2020 Jean-Claude Ramonet Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien Blanc 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

Relatively effuse bouquet showing white peaches, pears, yellow apples and slate. Palate a little disjointed, think this needs a bit more time to come together.

  • 2021 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

First time a Roumier Chambolle is so ready, though a little thin on the palate. Crushed strawberries, violets, aniseed, sage and licorice dominate the bouquet. Palate while showing a little lean, is actually quite nice and relatively fleshy. By all accounts, this probably has to be an anomaly based on how ready this is 🤣

  • 2013 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Vieilles Vignes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

Drinking very well. Signature acidity in place and extremely drinkable and consistent.

  • 2019 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Painfully youthful and needs loads more time to settle. Dark fruits, plums and chocolate, sandalwood and spices on the bouquet. Palate dominated by power and concentration - wisps and hints of filigree but this clearly needs a lot more time to settle and mature.

  • 2018 Domaine d'Eugénie Grands-Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Dark and stormy bouquet showing plenty of black fruit, cocoa, licorice and aniseed. Palate however showing quite ready for business, with elegance and concentration in good balance. Definitely still on the younger side for me and I would keep this away longer.

  • 2019 William Kelley Chambolle-Musigny Fouchères 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Lifted and elegant with purity yet depth and concentration. Red fruit dominated with cherries, cranberries, apple, violets and roses coming to the fore. Palate showing quite lovely density and balance - a really good showing.

  • 2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Has the house style changed? This was gorgeously approachable unlike most experiences with Meo. Morello cherries, candied plums, cloves, oregano and aniseed jump at you on the bouquet. Palate, naturally given the age, quite fruit forward but in a silky and sensual fashion. Wow - has the house style changed? This question rang repeatedly in my mind.

  • 2022 Coche-Dury Meursault Rouge 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

First time seeing that there is a Meursault rouge and have only tried the Volnays before. I’d say that comparatively the reds are made in a similar style - bouquet tends to lean towards crunchy red fruit, cherries and pomegranate come to mind with hints of spices on the backend - cloves and cardamon. On the palate, there is a lot of purity and sensuality though showing a little candied in nature. Finish is quite soft and silky.

  • 2004 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

In a perfect spot today. None of the greeny meanies here but instead very resolved and showing really well. Mulberries, cherries, smoke, sadle, aniseed, crushed violets and oregano on the bouquet. Palate shows off power and depth, while maintaining balance and finesse that only the top producers possess. Tannins soft and acidity gives this a good lift on the finish. Drinking really well today - not sure if there will be a ton of upside, hence drink now and no harm keeping this for a bit longer.

  • 2015 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Sangiovese Toscana IGT 95 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

The first bottle to be empty, within minutes, and with good reason. So silky and sensual with transparent and purity of fruit, palate is so effortless yet has such a commanding presence. Would be lovely to see how these ones age but 15s are a real winner.

  • 2019 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Sangiovese Toscana IGT 95 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Darker fruit profile but equally as seamless and silky, if not slightly youthful and brash. Great underlying and I am thrilled to have more of these that just arrived!

  • 2014 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

All my experiences with Bonneau Celestins has been animalistic with raw beastly power. This was quite the opposite - silky and gentle on the opening with ripe black and red fruit coming through in an elegant manner. Not quite what I envisioned but a soft spot nevertheless.

  • 2022 William Kelley Bourgogne-Aligoté 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté

I’ve heard how this has been likened to be d’auvenay and I get why folks may say so but I think this is uniquely in a class of its own. Zippy and energetic bouquet showing a lot of white fruits, nectarines and peaches, jasmine flower, custard, sudachi zest and yuzu peel. Palate has superb intensity, focus and precision culminating in one of those “ahh” moments, like a sun shining on your face after hours in a cold room. A great drink but not sure about premium in the market.

  • 2015 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes Vieille Vigne 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

This was showing immaculately. Signature fourrier aromatics coupled with silky yet dense fruit - nothing overripe here but everything encased in finesse.

  • 1990 Joseph Drouhin Griotte-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Didn’t quite hit the highs for me. Perfect condition and drinking seamlessly but perhaps a little bit Foursquare on the palate. Think time to drink these up.
