Introduction

Fellow forumite and Austinite Ron and his wife Amy graciously invited me to their house to drink through 3 2002s together for the Virtual 2002 tasting (Thanks Brian). We tasted the wines below with grilled meat, cheese, and crackers.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Château du Tertre 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Dark garnet red color. Beautiful nose of cigar box, licorice, floral aromas and violets. Tannic, but not overwhelmingly so. Pleasant flavors of cherry, cassis, tobacco, and a light kind of coffee. Good mouthfeel, well balanced. Ripe fruit, creamy texture, and nice finish.

  • 2002 Château Gloria 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Dark red color. Almost purple. Opaque. Brambly, gamey nose with graphite and cassis notes. Good grip, solid tannins, but hollow on the mid-palate. Mouthfeel is good, but finish too short. I think this is a wine that could likely be better with age, but I don't think it'll ever get into the 90+ point range as it lacks the depth and concentration that I associate with a wine in that qualitative category.

  • 2002 Château Monbousquet 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

Virtually undrinkable right out of the bottle. A tannic beast. After more than 4 hours in the decanter, the wine became approachable. Color seemingly as dark as night. Espresso, mocha, charcoal, and tobacco dominate the nose. Tastes of sweet fruit, plum, tobacco, coffee, and pain grille. Creamy and smooth texture and good length on finish. Compared to Gloria and Du Tertre, a hedonistic style of wine.

Closing

My impression of the 2002 vintage so far, based on my limited experience, is that it is a vintage in which there are definitely very good and enjoyable wines. The good news is that many are widely available and inexpensively priced. I will buy many more 2002s as I have so far been pleasantly surprised by the quality of even "lesser" wines.
