Introduction

An amazing bunch of wines for a late dinner on a weeknight, but considering the two sources of most of the wines--Atherton Imports' George Derbalian and Dee Vine Wines' Dade Thieriot--I shouldn't have been surprised. Both men have storied cellars. The food was quite lovely too.

George brought a flight of Grand Cru white Burgs, to which I added one, and Dade brought an amazing flight of mystery reds, along with a TBA from a legendary vineyard. All in all, a memorable treat.

Flight 1 - Grand Cru White Burgs (4 Notes)

This was George's flight, to which I added the Bertagna. The '02 Marc Colin was surprisingly pre-moxed, but the rest were beautiful, and the '00 Remoissenet was stunningly good. Our course for these was an albacore carpaccio, with cherry tomato and radish salad.

Flight 2 - Champagne (1 Note)

I'm a big fan of Vilmart, and this was a lovely vintage Champagne. Our course for this was lobster ravioli with artisan foie gras consomme.

Flight 3 - Mystery Reds (4 Notes)

George asked if we could guess which was the Burg, the Bordeaux and the Rhone. Fortunately, I was able to make those out accurately, and to correctly guess the Bordeaux was a Graves. I was pretty far off on vintages though. I thought the Cote-Rotie might be a '78, but would never have guessed '59, and I thought the LMHB was perhaps as old as '61, but never imagined it was 64 years old. I think George threw in the '90 Leroy to compare to the '90 Roty. When the Bordeaux was revealed as '44, Dade explained it was in honor of the birthday of his friend George from Philadelphia, who was with us, visiting Dade for the weekend, who was born in '44.

My entree for this course was a substantial amount of seared duck breast, sauteed chanterelles, foie gras and duck confit.

Flight 4 - Schloss Johannisberger TBA (1 Note)

The man responsible for the best source of German wines that I know of in this country came up with this amazing wine to end on. What a treat!
