Introduction

As Mark works for the company who imports the producer, and because the wine maker was out in Oz but I couldn't get to it, we decided to taste a few of their wines (with a single ring in). Dave joined us as well

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2023 Dönnhoff Riesling trocken

    Germany, Nahe

Mineral, slightly saline, touch of apple and peach. Medium plus intensity acidity, bone dry, stony textured, long, fruit grows with time. Lovely.

  • 2022 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Nahe

Peach, stone fruit, a little Sponti, white flowers, the immediacy of the fruit attack on the nose is impressive. Off dry, palate as per the nose with plenty of fruit attack, stone textured, long. Lovely.

  • 2023 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Nahe

more minerality and concentration than the 22, Sponti notes, with time the stone fruit as well. A sense of power and concentration on the palate, acid lends citrus to join the stone fruit, off dry, super long and persistent, good for the long term. Yummo.

  • 2023 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel

    Germany, Nahe

From half bottle. Lot's parallels with the 23 Spatlese, Sponti here as well. Sugar levels still quite dialled back, mineral notes, textured rasp is slightly coarse on the palate medium plus intensity acidity, concentration, very long, good.

  • 2013 Dönnhoff Riesling trocken

    Germany, Nahe

Peach, ripe apple, a little pear, honey, touch if citrus, a little kerosene note. Juicy, tangy a little glycerol fatness lends a sense of plushness, wet stone texture, bone dry, the fruit translate to the palate as well. Yum. Mark says a bit of botrytis...Hmm, possible with that richness.

  • 2018 Joh. Bapt. Schāfer Rümmelsheim Riesling trocken Steinköpfchen

    Germany, Nahe

Medium minus intensity aromas of a little candy floss, apple juice, waxy notes. Medium plus intensity acidity, more breadth and body than the Dönnhoff - perhaps the extra 2% abv? But less complex and flavourful, a little peppery note, touch of mineral burrs presents as a tacky quality. The apple from the note is joined by some apple skin bitterness as well.

  • 2006 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Nahe

Honey apricot, custard apple, a little tarragon note, touch of wet slate, ripe white peach. There is a tiny kerosene note as well which translates to the palate with the berry, and more baked stone fruit compote, texture like licking slate persists long, a little peely/pithy bitterness lends complexity on the very long finish with hints of cinnamon. Bloody hell. This is glorious.

  • 2018 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Nahe

Creamy, leesy notes, floral elements, stone fruit. off dry residual sugar is balanced by the medium plus intensity acidity, the stone fruit again but with a little red and green apple, a touch of silky burr persists on the long finish. This is really good but, annoyingly, over shadowed by the excellence of the 2006.

  • 2005 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel

    Germany, Nahe

From half bottle. A little mushroom, savoury underpin, slight dried apricot, dried apple, baking spice, a little caramel and bruised apple. Medium plus intensity acidity, just shy of sweet on the journey to jammy from compote, quite textured, fresh, slightly fleshy, a little orange marmalade, the savoury elements from the nose are more in the background on the palate lending complexity, longish. Nice but, from half, probably should have drunk this a few years ago.
