    Portugal, Alentejano, Vinho Regional Alentejano

    Interesting bouquet of meadow flowers, green apple, fresh mint, wafting fruit blossoms, and maritime top notes. Clean. The wine makes its strongest impression forward, and begins to fade at the back. The finish shows a touch of bitterness, typical of non-phenolic ripeness. Very good structure and strikingly low alcohol for the warm climate.

    The nose puts the mind to Provence, which evokes intrigue. The attack, middle, and back also suggest Provence. And still, something here is quite different, in unique ways. Structure and textures stand out. The finish drops off somewhat. Ridiculously low alcohol for a warm climate rosé.

    This Bandol lookalike bends the mind, given that it contains no Mourvèdre, and yeah, it is from Portugal. The bouquet commands attention, showing impressive interplay of fruit and earth. The taste profile, which aligns with the nose, is, well, friggin' delicious! Striking precision and balance. A touch more of anything would have put it over the top.

    The nose and taste profile put my mind to Cowhorn wines (during the Bill Steele era, particularly a terroir element he described as sugar bush), certain Haden Fig offerings (notably, native yeast elements), and Clos Léopold Gigondas. Certainly on the wild side, in every good way, showing root vegetables (beets), live herbs, iodine, white pepper, bramble (garrigue), rusted iron, and wafting savoiness (kelp). One or two hitches overall, which tends to be typical of wild wines. Intriguing!

    Strong notes of the Tourigas, albeit in distinctive terroir, with central Italian-like tomato leaf notes, and volatile acidity. There is substance to it, backed by medium plus acid and medium grainy tannins. The longer it breathed, the more pronounced the VA. A diamond in the rough. Best with food.
