Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2023 Merry Edwards Chardonnay Olivet Lane Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Yellow. Scents of oak and orchard fruit. Medium weight, woody base. Ripe pear and yellow apple, excellent acidity, a bit lactic, some vanillin. Oak astringency on the finish. Very good Mâconnais style Chardonnay.

  • 2023 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Dach Vineyard

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Light ruby. Cranberry aromas. Slightly lighter bodied than the Olivet. Red and blue fruit without much natural sweetness. High acidity. Similar lean, nervy style but less to it and shorter than the Olivet.

  • 2023 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Georganne

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Ruby. Rich black cherry, wood, and some cola on the nose. Lush, meaty dark fruit, soil, and licorice. Lower acidity than first two, much more noticeable ripe tannins. Big wine, moderate length. Fun and open now if not particularly detailed or complex.

  • 2023 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Meredith Estate

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Ruby. Floral and anise notes. Rich, broad feel. Dark fruit, savory elements, some menthol to balance the ripe fruit, some wood. Both more seamless and more lively than the Georganne, which is cut from a similar cloth. Exuberant but well balanced. Excellent and my favorite of the four 2023 Pinots even though there is something a bit Syrah-like about this.

  • 2016 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Bucher

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Out of Coravin magnum. Clear ruby center with gentle fading. Floral and sharp fennel aromas that are very different than the younger wines. Medium weight. Nicely ripe, almost candied red fruit followed by excellent acidity, soil, and grainy tannins that yield a short, grippy finish. Like 2 different wines, not integrated at all at ten years of age.
