Tuesday Night Blind Tasting

This was an off night for our group with the exception of the Conterno, the Montrose, the Faiveley Les St. Georges, and the Fuligni Brunello.

• 2017 Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

  Starter wine. Lifted red fruit, some structure, but more pretty than brawny with a touch of spice. The group who I served it blind to thought it was Vosne. Not what one would expect from NSG.

• 2015 Henri Jouan Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbé Vieilles Vignes

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru

  Tasted blind. Bloody, salty, iodine, equal parts red and blue fruit. The nose is blowing and the finish has a touch of sweetness.

• 2001 E. Guigal Ermitage Ex-Voto

  France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

  Tasted blind. Deep red cherry fruit that is a touch sour, mouth puckering tartness, little tar on the juicy finish.

• 2006 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

  Tasted blind. This was disappointing. Tasted like a sour cherry Barolo like wine with noticeable oak but was thin and lean.

• 2006 Nicolas Potel Beaune 1er Cru Teurons

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

  Tasted blind. Past its prime. Tasted like an old Barolo. Garnett color, touch of brown sugar. Fruit had faded.

• 2000 Château Rauzan-Ségla

  Tasted blind. Sour red fruit that was tough & lean on the green herbal finish. I called it St. Julien for its origin. Maybe this is still shut down?

• 2004 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia

  Tasted blind. Beautiful Nebbiolo nose with pure color. The best wine we've had so far tonight. Love the long finish and resolved tannin. Great wine.

  Non-Blind (my wine). Black fruit, nice nose of cedar & black licorice, touch of green herb, some iron and graphite. Drinking well now.

• 2010 Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain

  Tasted blind. Black inky color and some glycerine texture. Black cherry and Luden's cough drop medicinal like with a Cabernet Sauv. sweet finish. Not my style of wine.

  Tasted blind. Balanced and smooth N. Rhone wine with a pronounced black olive taste in the finish.

  Tasted blind. Nebbiolo nose that is tannic, woody, and has a very drying finish. I've had better.

• 2018 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis

  Tasted blind. Another Nebbiolo shows up in the line-up. This was tannic, young, reductive with some sulfur on the nose. The tannin sucks all of the moisture out of your mouth.

• 2019 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

  Tasted blind. While still very youthful, this is really great. The pedigree of this wine shows through its youth. Excellent.
