Introduction

An amazing day of wine and dine with the main event being the Faiveley luncheon organised by Paul and myself under AWFS - a rebel faction.

Flight 1 - Faiveley Luncheon @ Makaros (7 Notes)

A planned line-up of Faiveley wines as well as a few extras. All reds were tasted blind. The wine of the afternoon was a toss-up between the Wieninger and Suchots.

  • NV Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Rosé 88 Points

    France, Champagne

Freshly crushed orange peels lifted by pink grapefruit....there's some hazeline hand cream too! Fresh rose-tinted grip with amazingly seductive lovely strawberry strokes on the palate.

  • 2004 Faiveley Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Ruby red with browning on the edges. Lightly perfumed with floral notes and minerality peeking through. Dainty pretty sweet fruits consisting a hybrid of strawwberry-raspberry. Savory berries, earthy roots, dried herbs. Very elegant yet giving good weight and nobility on the palate. Does finish slightly on the dried earth.

  • 2004 Faiveley Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Robust nose of veggie compost, burg "ass" and spices. Hawthorne berry juice with some hints of spices. Wow! The palate is driven , weigthy and strawberry-tainted. This is an iron fist in a velvet glove...wait it is not yet velvety but more of cotton glove, which is still pretty smooth.

  • 2000 Wieninger Pinot Noir Grand Select 89 Points

    Austria, Wien

Very robust dark smelly "ass" notes with an explosion of mushroom mush, undergrowth and wet soil. Extremely suprisingly excellent balance on the palate with aged cherries, almost some meatiness and firm yet soft structure. Did get some cigarette ash nearing to the end of the finish too. If I had to choose, this was half a point better than the Faiveley Suchots. What is more suprising is that it only costs $30 a pop. I am impressed by the quality of this austrian pinot.

  • 2002 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos des Issarts 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

A lot of dried notes of dried spices, dried mushrooms, dried twigs and dried leaves but lifted with some flowers. I got lots of forest floor and wet earth lined by a low but detectable ring of half dried cherries and strawberries.

  • 2002 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Noticeable alc on the nose but still shows quite a lot of flowers, and some honey dew melons! Lovely balance with very very elegant delivery of cherry, mentholly spice (nutmeg and cloves?). Lively sharp acidity of sour cherries, this is big and bold with very grippy tannins. This just needs more time to develop.

  • 1999 Château de Fesles Bonnezeaux F de Fesles 79 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Bonnezeaux

Nice yellow gold. Smells of egg custard and plastic! On the palate, taste like a Singapore imitation of HK egg tart with some apricots and nail varnish. This is a bit flat with not enough acidity and sweetness. I do get manuka honey on the finish.

Flight 2 - Extended Tasting @ Denise Vivo (2 Notes)

Sasi kindly shared two more bottles with us in the later afternoon that went with the theme of the luncheon.

  • 1996 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Deep gold with teeny tiny bubble beads. Marmite, yeasty and bready. Slightly honeyed when swallowed. This is lovely, toasty and clean lemons. Hints of chicken essence shows but is enveloped by a certain sweet aura about it that I associate with sweet apple core or zappel drink! A lovely seamless and unique effort. This champagne has purity. I do love it because it tastes different from the other top vintage cuvees I have tasted.

  • 1999 Faiveley Latricières-Chambertin 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Dark mushroom-infused nose, some raw meat, pan-grilled roast duck and perfumed flowers progressively blossom nicely. Lastly, the dried chinese mushrooms feature more prominently. Big breakwave of cherry fruit, red dates and minerality hits the beach but flattens out quickly and rolls out nicely inland for quiote a distance with foamy cherry consomme. Very grippy tannins still , this is the most structured amongst the Faiveleys and seems the most classy and stately.Still needs another few years of cellaring.

  • 2007 McHenry Hohnen Chardonnay Rocky Road 81 Points

  • 2007 McHenry Hohnen Cabernet Merlot 78 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Sweet nose framed by branches, dirt, wood shed. I get strawberry jam with menthol finishing with minerality. Decent but not kiiling it for me. Has a certain milk chocolatey mouthfeel that is just a tad too cloying for me.

  • 2007 McHenry Hohnen Zinfandel Rocky Road 79 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Dark roast coffee aromas. Choc-covered plums that is big but not alc driven. Has sucking tannins. This is okay.

Flight 4 - Mum's birthday @ Le Bistrot (1 Note)

Recommended by Uncle L, I bought this bottle for my mum for the birthday dinner.

  • 1996 Château Clerc Milon 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Deep brooding purple. Big masculine nose of black horse leather, bull meatiness, some soy sauce, stable smells and a big dollop of green peppers.Very noble delivery of wild dark berries, plums and mulberries lifted by menthol and liqourice finishing with milk chocolateyness. This has a thick body that is gentle but weigthy and dense. Could be drunk for at least another 5 years.

Closing

What a day! I am pretty impressed, just as everyone was, by the typicity of Faiveley that brings out the terroir of its plot very obviously and classily. A very good range of Faiveley indeed. Pleasantly suprising was the Austrian pinot which caught everyone by suprise.
