Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2005 Cascina Castlet Monferrato Policalpo 86 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Monferrato

Nice Barbera, but nothing special. Decent fruit, very light tannins, smooth drinking, but didn't stand out in any way. Oh, the label did look pretty cool...

  • 1998 Sciorio Barbera d'Asti Il Sciorio Flawed

    Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d'Asti

Bland, sour fruit and somewhat dead in the mouth. I thought this 10 year-old Barbera was past its prime, but others who tasted it later than I said it was their favorite of the night. Found out when leaving the tasting that 4 bottles were considered corked or oxidized. Pity I didn't get to try the "good stuff".

  • 2003 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Quite impressive, although still a touch young to be fully enjoyable without serious decanter time (this was a pop-n-pour). Still, great cherry fruit, with a strawberry component, and although tannic, not overly so. My wine of the night.

  • 2005 Ca' del Baio Barbaresco Marcarini 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Another "too young" wine for a pop-n-pour, or without serious food (the cheese made this much more tasty). Rough around the edges, with some strawberry and earth, but heavy tannins that make the wine a chore to drink.

  • 2004 Podere Ruggeri Corsini Barolo Corsini 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

I think out of all the wines we drank tonight, this one has the potential to be a huge hit. It is still infanticide to open this wine now, unless you plan to decant it for a day or two. Brain-numbing tannins almost eliminate the fruit at this point. Some time spent swirling this in my glass (about 15 min of constant swirlage) allowed the tannins to relax and let some of the fruit escape. And it was good. Memory fails as to the individual flavors I got out of this, but I do recall "fruit" and "earth", besides the tannic crush. I think in 5-10 years, this will absolutely blow your mind.
