  • 2005 Joseph Drouhin Côte de Nuits Villages 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages

    Tasted double blind. Decanted for an hour, the temperature of the wine was quite cool, having been transported by bicycle in temps of about 0 deg C. Appearance: A very pale red, with a violet edge to it (4/5). Nose: not very expressive, but clear notes of cherry and leather coming through (11/15). Palate: a very light wine, with almost no tannins. A nice bittersweet taste of red berries like cranberry (15/20). Overall: a very nice wine, given the light colour and the light tastes I was inclined to think this was a Pinot Noir, but wasn't sure whether Burgundy was the place vs New Zealand. Burgundy it was. A very pleasant wine, very good value (7/10).

  • 2004 Château Bonnin Pichon Grande Réserve 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lussac Saint-Émilion

    Tasted double blind. Decanted for an hour, the temperature of the wine was quite cool, having been transported by bicycle in temps of about 0 deg C. Appearance: almost black with a ruby edge to it (5/5). Nose: lots of cassis here, especially as the wine warmed up. A hint of smokiness in the background, a kind of green streak to it, and as the wine warmed up and opened up, a hint of oak came through (11/15). Palate: lots of tannins here, a hint of smokiness also in the mouth, but above all cassis (14/20). Overall: this had to be a cabernet blend, the cassis was so dominant. I hazarded a guess that it was Bordeaux, the green streak in the nose making me go for that. And this time I was right! This goes for 13 euros in Finland and definitely is good QPR, I will be getting a couple for my cellar! (7/10).

Closing

I love blind tastings! This time the Bordeaux was a great surprise. I've passed over the Bonnin Pichon many times as a cheap Bordeaux not worth looking at, but I was wrong.
