2006 Red Burgs from Dujac and Comte de Vogüé

I had a chance this week to taste a few each of the new releases from Dujac and Vogüé. They were better than I expected. The Vogüé wines were, I thought, particularly impressive.

The Charmes-Chambertin really stood out in this line up. All had ripe fruit and firm, sweet tannins.

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

  Dark cherry red color; berry, tart red fruit, mineral and menthol nose; tart red fruit and menthol palate with sweet, firm tannins and good balance, needs a few years; medium-plus finish

The grand crus were really exceptional, and surprisingly approachable at this point, although both should be allowed some years to slumber and add to the complexity that's already there.

  Dark red violet color; big, spicy, red fruit, berry and oak spice nose; big, deep, juicy, tart cherry and mineral palate with structure and grip, but with a flavor profile more reminiscent of an elegant Chateauneuf du Pape than a typical 1er Cru Burgundy; medium-plus finish
