Introduction

Another great night at Chez Edmund - they are the consummate hosts. Three bottles over scrabble, cards and a long chat was a nit much for the two of us to handle though, as the ladies did not drink much.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Faiveley Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Sauterne-like gold in colour. Elsa and I found this to be real gem of a wine. The nose opened with a little layering of butter, sweet honey and nectar, fresh cut flowers, white plums and then a touch of grass, a little muskiness and an undertone of chalky mineral. Complex and lovely. The palate was superbly balanced, sweet and round with good weight, yet with classic Faiveley poise in its clean acid. Really nice, round flavours of lemon- butter, honeydew and more sappy white fruit at the very decently lengthy finish rounded the wine off.

  • 2006 Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards (TMV) White Coastal Region 92 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region

Yet another excellent bottle. We popped a Faiveley Meursault Charmes at first, but that was a little heavy for the Thai influenced food, so this was opened instead and it went much better. Absolutely cracking wine. Chalky mineral, beeswax and tropical fruit on the nose. Lots of mineral on the palate, but so nicely balanced out with sweet honeydew, starfruit and honey flavours and fresh, snappy acidity that carried the wine into a lovely, sappy finish that showed a final linger of chalk, lemon and beeswax.

  • 1999 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Third bottle of the night between the two of us, so we were a little tired by this time. Still, this was a good bottle of wine, if just a little modern for my tastes. We decanted this for quite awhile. Nose was all BdM - mushrooms, plums, a touch of pepper and sweet cherries. The modern touch came in on the palate, which had lots of sappy sweetness in the cherry fruit which overlay more typical savoury meatiness. Decent acidity and fine tannins were very well integrated by the time we drank it, so there was a good sense of balance and structure. Finish was a little short and tight at first, but opened up after more time to show strong hints of vanilla-ish oak.
