Kaisa brought the wines, I tasted double blind.

• 2006 Château de Marsan Premières Côtes de Bordeaux 84 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Entre-Deux-Mers, Premières Côtes de Bordeaux

  Decanted for an hour. Tasted double blind. Appearance: a dark red with a violet edge to it (4/5). Nose: cassis and vanilla, quite a round taste. Not very expressive and not very complex (11/15). Palate: some tannins with a good dollop of dark fruit like cassis. A touch of licorice and a hint of smokiness (13/20). Overall: this time I was completely in the forest (as we say in Finland), I first thought Italy, then changed my mind to South Africa. It was a Bordeaux, but not very typical in my opinion, and not very impressive (6/10).

• 2006 Casa Ermelinda Freitas Palmela 86 Points

  Decanted for an hour. Tasted double blind. Appearance: a dark red with a violet edge (4/5). Nose: quite pungent at first with lots of red berries and cherry. A hint of leather and a hint of smokiness (12/15). Palate: very little tannins in evidence, a light bodied wine, with red berries at the fore and a hint of smokiness, quite pleasant (14/20). Overall: this was a bit of a generic red wine, not bad, but nothing special. I thought it was OK and would not say no to a glass of this, but I won't be buying it for myself (6/10).
