Introduction
A small group of us got together for an evening of double blind whites and reds.
Flight 1 - WHITES from Anywhere (7 Notes)
Wines served double blind. However, each of the participants knew which ones were his.
Flight 2 - REDS from Anywhere (9 Notes)
Wines served double blind. However, each of the participants knew which ones were his.
Flight 3 - Two more reds (not blind) (2 Notes)
I brought out a couple more reds to try after the red flight.
Closing
As is always the case, I learned a great deal tasting an interesting line-up in a double blind format with a group of knowledgeable drinkers...
2001 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Monts Mains
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
$65.99 full retail. Slightly toasty, light popcorn. Waxy. Minerals. With air, the charred component began to fade. I contributed this wine to the line-up, so I knew what it was, but, double blind, it was interesting to see the group's reactions, reinforcing again the fact that Chablis often suffers in a blind tasting... This wine showed more of a charred / oak component than the '01 Butteaux from Raveneau (see TNs), though I have not tasted the two side by side.

2002 Domaine Huet Vouvray Sec Le Haut-Lieu
France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
$16.99 full retail (375ml). Ultrafresh fruit on the nose - red cherry, quince and a floral component. Firm acid / mineral frame. Well balanced. Long. Excellent young wine. I contributed this wine to the line-up so I knew what it was but, double blind, the group all loved the wine but were guessing it was from Germany or Alsace.

1993 Kalin Cellars Chardonnay Cuvée W
USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
Tasted double blind. 2nd Darkest color of the flight of 8 wines (the darkest was the '94 Weinbach Gew. [see TN]). Coffee and nuts on the nose. Solid acid frame and well balanced in the mouth. My guess: older ('94/'95??) CA Chard... This wine is holding up well. The person who brought it said it was searingly acidic in its youth.

Tasted double blind. Light color. Lightly efferv. when first poured. Very light and tense on the palate. Minerals. My guess: '03 Muscadet.

Tasted double blind. Appley. Fairly round in the mouth. Slightly perfumey. I was leaning towards Loire, but someone's Marsanne comment made me start thinking it could be a white Rhone...

2001 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Clos Saint Philibert Blanc

Tasted double blind. Light minerals, faint underlying nuttiness. Good acid on the back end. My guess: a '99 from Chassagne. This is a solid value, IMO - I was certainly thinking it was a more expensive white Burg from a more "prestigeous" appellation.

1994 Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Altenbourg Cuvée Laurence

Tasted double blind. Darkest color in flight of 8 wines. Strong lychee aroma, with honey and light toffee. Thick, round and moderately sweet. I guessed '94 Gewtz. from Alsace, though I commented that it could be Muscat. The lychee note made me go with Gewtz. in the end. I was happy with my guess once the wine was reveiled...!
