Introduction

Each month, this retailer holds a tasting for members of its wine club. This month's tasting featured a comparative tasting of old world and new world Pinots. Wines were arranged with one new world and one old world Pinot per flight, grouped in roughly the same price range.

Flight 1 - Welcome wine (1 Note)

A simple white was poured while members arrived for the tasting.

  • 2003 Domaine de la Collonge Pouilly-Fuissé 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé

$15.95. Pale gold color. Very minerally nose, with apple blossoms. Palate is one dimensional, with tart green apple flavors and a slightly minerally finish.

Flight 2 - First Pinot flight. (2 Notes)

The Bourgogne edged out the Parker Station at our table, 4-0. The consensus was that the food-friendliness of the Bourgogne gave it a nod.

Flight 3 - Flight 2, a slight step up. (2 Notes)

Two decent wines, with the Girardin's acidity winning out. Noticing a pattern here.

  • 2002 Jacques Girardin Santenay 1er Cru Clos Rousseau 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru

$19.95. Bright ruby color. Nose of smoky cherry fruit. Plums, earth and bright cherries on the palate. Medium length finish. Good acidity, would be better with food.

  • 2001 Marimar Estate Pinot Noir Don Miguel Vineyard 89 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

$27.95. Ruby colored, but slightly cloudy...must not have been decanted and had some fine sediment. Cherries, raspberries and a slighty meaty aroma on the nose, with a good finish and strong fruit on the palate.

Flight 4 - Flight 3 (2 Notes)

I felt the Rion had the most complex and layered nose of the night.

Flight 5 - Last flight, the big boys. (2 Notes)

The Gevrey was the powerhouse of the evening, just needs some time to gain some complexity. I expected more from the Beaux Freres, and think this bottle may have been very slightly corked.

  • 2002 Domaine des Beaumont Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

$62.95. Ruby colored with a slight orange tint at the very edge. Smoky, earthy fruit on the nose follows though to a well-balanced palate showing minerals, earth and fruit.

  • 2001 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Belles Soeurs

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

$40.95. Ruby with a slight orange tint at the edge. At first I thought this was mildly corked - there was nothing on the nose. Severe swirling brought out some barely noticeable smoky cherry and red fruit aromas. Maybe this is just really, really tight. Palate showed a small amount of red fruit and acidity. Still not sure if this is just extremely tight or if this bottle was mildly corked. Not rated.
