Introduction

A tasting of the cheaper wines from Charles Back, one of South Africa's most pioneering winemakers. I've always enjoyed his wines and this tasting didn't change my mind.

Flight 1 - White Wines (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Goats do Roam Wine Company Goats do Roam White 85 Points

    South Africa

    Pale straw color. A dry, floral nose. Simple pear, apple and citrus flavors. A short, crisp finish. The good acidity makes this a pleasant quaffing wine and good for simple food fare.

  • 2004 Fairview Sauvignon Blanc 88 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region

    Straw color. A tropical/acidic nose of kiwi fruit and gooseberry. Wonderful, clearly defined fruit. Quite lush despite this yet tight as well. Hint of earth and mineral in the finish. Very good.

Flight 2 - Red Wines (4 Notes)

The GDR Villages wine was the surprise stand-out, with a fair bit of complexity and real grip and vigor.

  • 2003 Goats do Roam Wine Company Goats do Roam 84 Points

    South Africa

    Dark ruby/garnet. Hot nose with red fruits and a little funk. More red fruit and a little funk in the mouth. Soft, supple tannins, medium acidity. A sort finish. Never a wine that has really impressed me. The GDR in Villages is a big step up.

  • 2004 Goats do Roam Wine Company Goats do Roam in Villages 91 Points

    South Africa

    Dirty ruby color with garnet hints. A creamier nose than the regular GDR cuvée. Red and black fruits, with a little funk, possibly from a little Pinotage perhaps. With air surprisingly deft notes of kirsch/cherry liquer. The first sip reveals rich fruit flavors of red currant, black currant with gripping tannins and a good acid bite. There is some funk, as on the nose, but this is a positive. This wine has a real attack, is not at all jammy, and is very refreshing.

  • 2001 Fairview Shiraz 87 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region

    Dark ruby. Some immediate oak, then blackberry, on the nose. Very fruity, supple, with good grip. Blackberry, clove, vanilla, and a little earthiness. Already mature, if you have this, drink up.

  • 2003 Goats do Roam Wine Company Goat-Roti 89 Points

    South Africa, Western Cape

    Dark ruby. Nose of blackberry and kirsch, with some clear oak notes. Currant, blackberry, and red currant are the primary flavors in this medium bodied wine. It finishes with a little heat. Supple, round and quite pleasing. Sweet, gripping tannin. Improves with a little air. Not as good as the 2001 or the 2002 releases.
