Introduction

My wife Jill and I had not been able to drink any great wines together for quite some time and we needed one of those special nights. I made dinner that consisted of a starter of heirloom tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil and aged balsamic. Main course of grilled rib roast and grilled squash, and a pear/almond tart and Goat Le Chevrot for desert.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • NV Jose Dhondt Champagne Grand Cru Mes Vieilles Vignes Blanc de Blancs 95 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

very creamy nose, toast, bread dough, vanilla crackers. Palate lemon and citrus, with a great finish. Great balance with the fruit and acidity.

  • 1990 Château Montrose 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

Oh my this is a great wine. It was closed for about 2 hours. No sign of bret. Pitch black color that just got darker and more dense with time. Aromas of leather and tobacco do not even hint of what is waiting on the palate. Enormous, massive black fruit, licorice, saddle leather and a bit of salt cote the tongue with just a hint of tannin. Amazing finish that just keeps on going. I would love to try this wine next to the 89 Haut Brion.

  • 1990 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

some mold on the top of the cork, signs it had leaked. Nose of honey and almond paste. Very sweet and fat palate. Almond, honey, and tropical fruits. Lacking a bit of acidity but still very good.

Closing

A great evening, well even though Jill did fall asleep before desert (yea I had to wake her up) but that meant I got most of the Montrose!
