IWFSC Governors Lunch

A very nice Governors lunch hosted by Hugo and Augie III. The food at the Chicago Club was much better than I anticipated.

  Lovely rich round champagne. I'd say outstanding for a relatively inexpensive NV.

• 2006 Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay Cold Creek Vineyard 91 Points

  USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

  Viognier-like nose with a nice chard palate. Wasn't expecting much from this wine and I liked it better than I expected.

  Nice big red chewy CdP. Wasn't familiar with the producer, but not bad at all, if just a bit simple. 90-91 pts.

• 2003 St. Supéry Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Estate Vineyard 93 Points

  Again, didn't know much about this wine and had modest expectations. Surprisingly good with chocolate and cinnamon notes. Nice. 93+ pts.

  Nice round smooth sauternes with good character. Not the 88, but very nice. 93-94 pts.

• 1970 Fonseca Porto Vintage 93 Points

  Portugal, Douro, Porto

  Best showing yet for this wine for me. Full crimson/garnet color. Warm rich nose of spicy black fruit. Nice round spicy black fruit carries through to the palate. 93-94 pts.
