Introduction

Another AWFS fringe event for Christmas centred around a set of CdPs from top producers. We had a lovely BBQ dinner to go with the wines.

Flight 1 - Some White Starters (3 Notes)

Paired with Paul's wonderful salad , some of Fiona's nice potato skins and baked asparagus on toasted cheese bacon and last but not least, very delicious crab otah prepared by Uncle Lawrence and his wife.

Flight 2 - Horizontal of 05 CdPs and a Ruche (5 Notes)

Paired with an array of BBQ meats.

  • 2007 Tenutaderie Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato 82 Points

Italy, Piedmont, Monferrato, Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato

Rose petals and bandung! all the way. Has a pretty diluted rose syrup sweetness. I enjoyed this lesser known varietal when I first tasted it and still do. Its just so...pretty.

  • 2005 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape 81 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Ripe cherries, soy, some floral notes (notably lavender) . Prunish and sappy with ripe morello cherries but also showing a balancing streak of sourness across the mid palate. However, this is just a simple girl next door.

  • 2005 Domaine de Beaurenard (Paul Coulon et Fils) Châteauneuf-du-Pape 82 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

A stronger showing effort compared to the Usseglio. Higher toned red fruits with brambly black cherries. Some roasted savoriness with a rounded big mouthfeel. Quite a full wine.

  • 2005 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 84 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

At first, this was pretty closed up with just a deep dark infusion of sweet ripe dark fruits. However, upon the second round of tasting after allowing the wine to sit in the glass for a bit, the true characteristics of the wine shows with nice floral and licorice kirsch spice notes more distinguishable from the main concentrated core of raspberry fruit. What is more enjoyable is the very garrique meaty horse-y nuances that distinguishes it from the rest of the CdPs of the night. A hard toss up between this and the Clos du Caillout as WOTN.

  • 2005 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Caillou Les Quartz 84 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very big on the woodspice, five spice and spice box! The most dense and overloaded with sweet morello cherries with slightly chocolatey texture. The lushest of the lot tasted but some people threw up the suggestion that it was overoaked which explains all the woodsy aromas. But I thought it added character to the wine and given the concentration and concealed power of the fruits, it definitely wasn't OTT.

Flight 3 - Finishers (2 Notes)

Paired with ice cream brownie baked by Uncle Lawrence. Easily the WOTN is the Sandalera.

  • 1996 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux 1ère Trie Clos du Bourg 86 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Had this after some ice cream brownie but realised the dessert was too sweet for this wine. Had to rinse my mouth to re-taste it. Taking into consideration the pairing, I was still able to discern honeyed creamy lemon custardy notes lined by nice clean long chalky minerality and bright tropical green apples. Deliciously balanced with lovely crispness.

  • NV Sandalford Sandalera 94 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

My God! This is as close I have gotten to heaven with a dessert wine. Given to me as a gift from my brother, who lives in Perth. This beautiful masterpiece of a wine bottle is a multiple award winner but a very Western Australia insiders wine with limited bottles exported. This bottle was bought at cellar door and I heard there was a limit that any customer is allowed to buy (i.e. allocations only). Apparently, all my brother's friend in Perth kept raving about it a few years back when I was at his wedding. On his wedding night, while the rest of us were at his place just chilling out, they tried to get his last bottle from his cellar on the pretext that I was there and it was a special occasion. But lo and behold when we brought it up, it was empty!!! I suspect his housemates or the mice might have been slowing sipping it away.

Made from Pedro and Muscadelle grapes, this is an australian styled sherry port with a blend of multi vintages of wines. The average age is 15 years with wines as old as 25 years blended in. I thought my brother tell me that his bottle was a slightly more special one with some wines as old as 100years blended in as well. Anyhow, its just amazing!

Lovely mature brownish brickish red. Big, luscious, heavenly aromas of dark roasted premium coffee beans, rich Christmas molten toffee, hot butterscotch and hints of a storage room filled with spices. On the palate, this doesn't disappoint with lovely dark chocolate-covered prunes that have been stuffed with honey-roasted nuts and filled with a filling of sweet sexy caramello cream! Wow! What is amazing is the balance given by whisky brandy like lift. Beautiful....a tear just came off my right eye.

Closing

Not extremely impressed by the 05 CdPs so far. I thought they were pretty okay but nothing kickass like the 05 bordeauxs.
