Introduction

Well well... some familiar faces gathered together for some lamb and potatoes :) at our house in queens..nothing formal - just nice conversation and a friendly atmosphere. there were 7 of us - Fernando, Brent, Tom +1, my mom, Countess and well...ME :)

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

brocolli salad with cheese/bacon
butternut squash (baked)

  • 2003 Château de Pinet Gaujal de Saint Bon Picpoul de Pinet 88 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Picpoul de Pinet

great QPR!!! this wine had an excellent zing - and at the same time was rather rich on the palatte. floral on the nose. but i would advise to serve this on the cooler side (below cellar temp) since when it gets warmer the alcohol sticks out just a touch. othervise a well balanced wine with excellent acidity.

  • 2004 Melville Chardonnay Estate Clone 76 - Inox 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

well well.... all great experts as we are...Brent brought this foil wrapped and said "guess" ... neither I nor Fernando said chardonay... heh..we thought of anything else just not that... Nutty on the nose - with time turning more floral/tropical. light body with none of the heaviness one gets from california chard (but this is all steel tanks) ... delicious wine! and a surprize. 14.9% alcohol...cant feel it al all!

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

Lamb - boneless leg of Aussi lamb broiled to medium-rare (or what is known in the rest of the world as rare)

  • 1999 Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico San Marcellino 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

WOTN for me and many others... WOW..chianty can do THIS??? this was at least a brunello weight here... AMAziing - pure essence of sangiovese - with all the high acidity on the nose and the beutifull cherry on the palatte... delicious - still way too young... LOTS LOTS of power under the hood here...

  • 2003 Turley Zinfandel Old Vines 91 Points

    USA, California

well you cant mistake this for anything other than Turley... TONS of fruit on the nose - just dripping with red/black berries and plums. there was also a tobaco/dead cigaret streak that some of us noticed. The palatte - even in this youngling is very well balanced - no heat AT ALL... surprized me on that. Rich and juicy but lacking some complexity. maybe with time? (just looked at other notes on this..WOW ... almoust everyone said the same thing...)

  • 1999 Tardieu-Laurent Saint-Joseph Vieilles Vignes Les Roches 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph

delicious nose - pure rhone - bacon and black berries. very pure. the palatte is well balanced and with a great finish - the only thing missing is a bit hollow middle - but that was to be expected. delicious wine - once again i am convinced that i love Rhone reds...from wither Syrah or grenache .. or anything else it seems :)
