This was supposed to be an entire tasting of 2003s but due to a bottle selection mix-up a couple of 2002s were included.

Nice wines but some oddities due to the extreme weather conditions in Europe in 2003.
2003 Verget Chablis Terroir de Chablis 88 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis
Light gold in color; Slight pear and heavy stone minerality on the nose and through the middle. Finishes crisp with some acidity. This wine is completely unoaked and quite focused as pure chardonnay. An early drinker and very nice buy at ~$22.

2003 Domaine Anne Gros Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Blanc 88 Points

Light gold in color with green apples on the nose. In the middle there were minerals, spices and pears. I liked the texture and medium weight of the wine. Somewhat unique which might make it a buy as an early drinker even at around $27. This is made from 80 year-old vines and aged in 80% 500-liter barrels (half new, half 1 year old) and 20% stainless steel tanks.

Very light in color and weight with very little mineral flavors and a sour finish. Lean with too much oak. Overpriced at around $27.

2003 Verget Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Sous le Puits 90 Points

Light gold in color; Limestone and green pear on the nose. In the middle lime, green pear and apples along with toasty oak. Nicely focused. Perhaps typical of the 2003 vintage for some wines this seemed a bit fat (atypical for this wine) but will be a good early drinker. Perhaps overpriced at around $47.

2003 Verget Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères Caniculus 86 Points

A fat oak bomb. At least JM Guffens did not bottle this as the regular bottling. His comment on this one is that it tastes a lot like CA chardonnay. Sour on the finish and overpriced at around $47. blech.

2003 Domaine Jean Garaudet Pommard Les Noizons 90 Points

90 points with some upside; Right now this wine is very closed but had a nice nose of minerals leading to black cherry in the middle. Gorgeous mouthfeel - suede came to mind. Aging is a question mark on this one (at what point will the fruit/tannins be in balance) but the price is right to experiment at around $45. This producer makes very good wine at lower prices that are rarely touched in Burgundy. Tasty.

Medium garnet in color with a bit of Burgundy funk on the nose. Also on the nose was a distinct aroma that everyone was trying to place - one person said cinnamon but others including me were getting eucalyptus that is definitely not normal in Burgundy. Medium weight with drying tannins on the finish. Decently priced at around $46.

A good quality village level wine with some earthiness and a bit of Burgundian funk on the nose. Cherries and spice in the middle of this medium weight wine. Seemed tight with some dryness on the finish. Around $60.

Well-structured with minerals on the nose and throughout. It disappeared on the finish which probably isn't a good sign for the wine moving forward. Around $77.

2003 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui 93 Points

Dark purple in color; Somewhat more sweet and fat that this wine has been in previous vintages. However, it is the real deal with black cherries, Asian spices and my very favorite flavor in Burgundies, violets. A long aromatic finish with just a touch of heat. It has all of the right attributes for aging but having tasted previous vintages I'm not sure the acidity is quite there for a 10 year plus wine. I would probably try one of these at 8 years post-vintage. It has a Grand Cru cost at around $120.
