For someone who lives large, a pre-birthday dinner demands something appropriately outsized: magnums all around. Jonathan deftly organized this event as usual, at the recently opened Tanglewood in Santana Row, with an attractive group of friends (i.e., far more women than average at a fine wine dinner) and a magnum theme. A great night of eclectic wines and impressive, thoughtful, updated American cuisine from Chef Quentin Topping.

1990 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Blanc des Millénaires 96 Points
France, Champagne
From magnum - rich, honey cream nose; gorgeous, with depth and breadth to its elegant fruit that includes hints of orange, lemon and ginger and tangy acidity; long finish
