Introduction

An impromptu lunch with Alex. I brought white, he brought red, both turned out to be excellent wines. Nice food as well.

  • 2007 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese trocken 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    This was a beautiful bottle of wine, and it went perfectly with the Heng Hua food that we had. Nose was a little muted at first, then it just opened up and gently unfolded with musky flowers, spiced apples and lychee, growing ever more perfumed as it took on air. The bit of rubber and blue slate gave away its Mosel origins. Perfect, perfect balance on the palate - something that I have always appreciate from this house - with mouthwatering acid, fruit and sweetness perfectly integrated. The wine had a sticky creamy mouthfeel, with rich apple, lemon curd, melon and honeysuckle flavours, yet the acid and citrus flavours reminiscent of grapefruit and lemon pips kept the wine so lithe that it could pass of as a Kabinett rather than a Spat. Finish was long and clinging, with the cinnamon and nutmeg spice that often springs up from the Würzgarten, or Spice Garden, vineyard. Excellent wine, great typicity, very delicious.

  • 2005 Woodlands Margaret 93 Points

    Way too young, but really, really good. Dark purple colour. Nose smelled a little dirty at first, like funk mixed in wood - a little Brett? After some time, that settled down into a meaty, plummy mix along with some high tone sandlewood and spice box. More dry wood and really firm tannins on the palate, with pure cassis and savoury meat tones with a sprinkle of spice. Thyme especially came to mine. Eventually, more and more Margaret River, bright berry-ish tones started emerging - delicious. Long, clingy finish showed vanilla and sprinkles of pepper. Nice balance and structure throughout from the acid and very fine tannins. This was a very fine wine that deserves aging. Excellent.
