Introduction

Jen, Jimmy, and I stopped by the Bonny Doon tasting room in Santa Cruz after a morning of kayaking with Ken and Jocelin. The tasting room is a good 20 minutes from anything else in Santa Cruz somewhere in the woods. It's a nice little building set in front of the winery with tons of room and more individual tasting "stations" so people don't get too crowded. The woman helping us was nice, enthusiastic, and fairly knowledgeable on the wines. In addition to wines for sale, there's a bunch of other stuff, including the chocolate used in the Framboise tasting. All in all, a pleasant tasting experience, even if a bit out of the way and no where near any vines.

Okay, for Viognier. Not completely smooth, but not sharp or unpleasant.Full, floral, some fruit.

  • 2004 Bonny Doon Vineyard Malvasia Bianca Ca' del Solo 88 Points

Interesting white wine. A very Gewurtz nose -- very floral, some fruit. Flavor was very different, more fruity. Very, very dry, sharp, bitter.

DEWN wine. Light red wine color. Somewhat Zinny nose, lots of cherry. Huge oak on the palette, very tannic, with nearly no acid. Some fruit, but not much.

Lighter Zin. Very Zinny nose, very fruit forward, no noticable oak. Some spice. Excellent Zin for the price.

Sharp, bitter. Green, herby, menthol, earthy. Didn't like this at all.

  • 2003 Bonny Doon Vineyard Muscat Vin de Glacière 89 Points

    USA, California

This is an "icebox" ice wine made from muscat grapes. Smells almost like Green Tea Tropical. Has quite a lot going in the nose and on the palate. Simple, still. The taste doesn't change in your mouth at all. Not much acid, but the sweetness isn't too overwhelming, and this is a very pleasant inexpensive dessert wine. Very, very smooth.

  • NV Bonny Doon Vineyard Bouteille Call 87 Points

    USA, California

This was interesting. Very thick even for port. The sweetness wasn't overwhelming, but it was a touch hot. It was also a touch disjoint with the rasberry mixed in. Jen kinda liked it. I thought it was interesting and very drinkable, but it didn't jump out as great.

  • NV Bonny Doon Vineyard Raspberry Framboise

    USA, California

Hard to rate this because its so different. This is more an ingredient than stand-alone wine. It was served in these tiny dark chocolate cups, which was pretty cool. By itself its quite hot (tastes hotter than it's 17.5%) and tastes almost like a liquor. With the chocolate it was a very cool combination. More like a raspberry chocolate than the complex interaction of a LH Zin and chocolate. Jimmy is going to try to make a soufflé out of this.
