Introduction
The pairing challenge here was the spicy Vietnamese crab preparation. For me, the complexity of the Austrian wine worked great, but others favored the weight and richness of the Alsatian example. The Kabinett's weight did not stand up to the crustacean.
2007 Weingut Karlsmühle Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Kabinett
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Pale. Grapefruit, papaya, and brown spice on the nose. Rich and somewhat sweet with low acidity. Dull and heavyhanded for a Mosel Kabinett.

2006 Nikolaihof Riesling Federspiel Vom Stein
Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Straw colored. Fascinating nose of crushed herbs. Light, lively, and intensely mineral. Delightful.

2002 Albert Boxler Riesling Sommerberg
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Medium yellow. Ripe, dried peach aromatics with some early petrol elements. Full bodied, off dry with excellent acidity. Entering its fully mature phase and slightly less sweet than my recollection of the last bottle tasted. The minerality here was probably less perceptible than it would have been had it not followed the Austrian wine.
